Brainerd High School Graduation Requirements

• Minnesota Graduation Assessments

Students graduating in Minnesota participate in state approved

assessments in the areas of reading, math, and science.

​

• Credit Requirement: 44 credits minimum:
• 8 English
• 7 Social Studies
• 6 Math
• 6 Science
• 2 Art
• 2 Health/PE
• 1 Personal Finance
• 12 Electives

Example of a Grade 9 Schedule

Grade 9 Intensive/AP Options

• English 9 Intensive
• Geometry Intensive

(Prerequisite: Grade 8 Intermediate Algebra)

• AP Human Geography

(This is a two-semester class)

We encourage students who are motivated and interested to consider taking an

Intensive or AP course. It is recommended to have grade level reading proficiency

but no previous experience in honors or gifted education is required.

College Credit Earning Options

• BHS provides college credit earning opportunities starting at grade 9.
• These courses are designed to be rigorous and challenging.
• Weighted grades are awarded for AP and PLTW
• A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0, D=2.0

​

• 9th grade options include the following year-long courses:
• AP Human Geography (AP)
• College credit can be earned depending on final test score.
• Introduction to Engineering Design (PLTW)
• College elective credits awarded to students who pass the final cumulative exam.

• Electives are a great way to explore career pathways
• Choose courses that support your interests
• ASL, Spanish, IED, Music are year-long options
• Choose 6 elective courses for the year
• Choose 4 alternate elective courses

Strength and Performance

• NEW in 2024, we welcomed a full-time Strength and Performance Coach, Alex Brodjeski, to BHS.
• Students have the ability to receive first-rate, strength and performance training during the school day!
• Strength I and II are introduction courses.
• Strength III is an advanced course that will provide student athletes with high level in-season and out-of-season training. The prerequisites for this class are Strength I or a Warrior student-athlete.
• Coach Brodjeski works with all 31 varsity teams/coaches and the PE teachers to ensure comprehensive strength and performance training to all of our student-athletes.

• Some electives have a GPA recommendation.
• The GPA recommendation is in place to set students up for academic success.

• If the GPA recommendation is not met this year, challenge yourself to improve your GPA and register for the class next year.

Study Centers are Recommended

• Students are encouraged to take a Study Center.
• Study Centers provide extra time for homework during the school day.
• The 7 period-day provides time in your schedule.
• No credit is earned for Study Centers, but our schedule is built for them.

• Yes, students will be able to work with their online teacher in-person at the high school if needed.

• Spots are designated on campus to complete work; BOS Students have an Online Open Hour when they are free to leave the building

• Online courses are available 24/7; Due dates are assigned for assessments

• Online classes follow the same pacing as the comparable in-person class.
• Activities and assessment methods are selected to support learning in an online environment.

• Students can transfer from the online class to the in-person class during the first 15 schools days from the start of the semester.
