The name of this channel is Beyond The Fundamentals. If this is not where you are willing to go,  and if you are not growth-oriented, then this channel may not be appropriate for you at this time.

The following contains growth-oriented content. Non-growth-oriented viewers may be triggered into defensiveness by their attachment to propositional “beliefs” which they hold in ‘having mode,’ thus provoking them to respond in fear, anger, resentment, and to accuse of all manner of heresy, liberalism and backsliding that would enable them to delay taking responsibility for their own growth and transformation. Viewer discretion is advised.

John 14:6 (KJV)

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Acts 9:2 (KJV)

2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

Acts 18:25–26 (KJV)

25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

Acts 19:9 (KJV)

9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

Acts 19:23 (KJV)

23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

Acts 22:4 (KJV)

4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

Acts 24:14 (KJV)

14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:

Acts 24:22 (KJV)

22 And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.

“I AM THE WAY”

Matthew 22:35–40 (KJV)

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

1 Corinthians 13:1 (KJV)

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Colossians 3:14 (KJV)

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Romans 13:8–10 (KJV)

8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

1 Timothy 1:5–6 (KJV)

5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

1 Peter 4:8 (KJV)

8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

1 Corinthians 13:13 (KJV)

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

The Apostle Paul did not visit Colosse according to the accounts in the Book of Acts. In fact, there's no mention of Paul ever traveling to Colosse in the New Testament. The Letter to the Colossians, which Paul wrote, suggests that he had not personally visited the city but had heard about the church there from others, such as Epaphras, who was a key figure in establishing the Christian community in Colosse (Colossians 1:7-8; 2:1).

Paul wrote the Epistle to the Colossians while he was in prison, traditionally believed to be in Rome. The epistle was likely written around A.D. 60-62, during this imprisonment, but it was sent to the Colossian church rather than delivered in person.

13 of 32

The "Prison Epistles" are traditionally understood to include the letters of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. These letters were written by the Apostle Paul during one of his imprisonments.

Timing and Context of the Prison Epistles

  1. Ephesians
  2. Philippians
  3. Colossians
  4. Philemon

Likely Dates of Composition:

  • Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon: Most scholars date these letters to around A.D. 60-62.

Context of Imprisonment:

These epistles are traditionally associated with Paul's first imprisonment in Rome, which is described in Acts 28:16-31. During this imprisonment, Paul was under house arrest but had a degree of freedom, allowing him to receive visitors and write letters. This imprisonment occurred after Paul’s appeal to Caesar and his subsequent journey to Rome (Acts 25:11-12; Acts 28:30-31).

Period during the Book of Acts:

The prison epistles are believed to have been written during the period described in Acts 28, specifically during Paul’s house arrest in Rome, which is mentioned at the end of the book of Acts (Acts 28:30-31).

After Acts 28:

The Book of Acts ends with Paul under house arrest in Rome, around A.D. 62. The prison epistles were written during this time. There is no mention in Acts of what happens to Paul after this two-year period, leading many to conclude that these letters were written during the final portion of the timeline covered in Acts, before or as Acts 28 concludes.

To summarize:

  • The Prison Epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon) were written during Paul's first imprisonment in Rome, around A.D. 60-62.
  • This imprisonment corresponds to the period described at the end of the Book of Acts, specifically Acts 28:16-31.

Paul Warned Not to Go to Jerusalem

Acts 20:22–23 (KJV)

22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:

23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.

Acts 21:3–4 (KJV)

3 Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden.

4 And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

Acts 21:10–14 (KJV)

10 And as we tarried there [Caesarea] many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.

13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

24 of 32

Acts 28:16–20 (KJV)

16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.

20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

Acts 28 – Released from Prison

AD 62

Possible Travels: After his release, Paul likely resumed his missionary activities. The Pastoral Epistles (1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus) provide some clues:

  • Spain: Paul had expressed a desire to visit Spain in Romans 15:24, 28, and some early Christian writers (such as Clement of Rome) suggest that Paul did indeed travel to Spain.
  • Crete: Paul left Titus in Crete to organize the church (Titus 1:5), indicating he spent time there.
  • Ephesus: Paul may have revisited Ephesus, where he left Timothy to oversee the church (1 Timothy 1:3).
  • Macedonia: Paul mentions traveling to Macedonia after leaving Timothy in Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3).
  • Nicopolis: Paul planned to spend the winter in Nicopolis (Titus 3:12).

?

AD 64-67

A.D. 67: Paul’s Death

  • A.D. 64-67: Paul is arrested again and imprisoned in Rome.
  • A.D. 67: Paul is martyred in Rome.
  • Martyrdom in Rome: According to church tradition, Paul was martyred in Rome around A.D. 67. Tradition holds that he was beheaded, which was a common method of execution for Roman citizens.

2 Timothy 4:10–11 (KJV)

10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

Acts 13:13 (KJV)

13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John [Mark] departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

Acts 15:36–41 (KJV)

36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

Philippians 3:3–15 (KJV)

3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:

5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;

6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

2 Corinthians 11:20–33 (KJV)

20 For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.

21 I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.

22 Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I.

23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.

25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?

30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.

31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

32 In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:

33 And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands.

While the apostles were still alive, they were battling false doctrine. There were false brethren (2 Cor. 11:26), false teachers and false prophets (2 Pet. 2:1-2), false apostles (Rev. 2:2; 2 Cor. 11:13), people forging letters from apostles (2 Thess. 2:2) and plenty of warning to watch out for deception (Matt. 24:2; 1 Tim. 4:1-3).

Meanwhile, the apostles gave instruction to mark and avoid people teaching false doctrine (Rom. 16:18), to withdraw from corrupt perverse teachers (1 Tim. 6:5), to withdraw from disorderly brethren (2 Thess. 3:6), and to turn away from wicked religious people (2 Tim. 3:5).

Furthermore, many people are warned against by name such as Diotrephes (3 John 9), Demas (2 Tim. 4:10), Alexander the Coppersmith (2 Tim. 4:14), Hymenaeus and Philetus (2 Tim. 2:17).

To top it all off, Peter has a pattern of needing to be corrected, like when Jesus called him "Satan" (Matt. 16:23), when he denied Christ 3 times (Matt. 26:69-74), and when Paul had to correct Peter, withstanding him to the face for legalistic dissimulation (Gal. 2:11-14).

With all this in mind, I am honestly baffled by a trend that I see.

For some reason, despite the apostles facing all this error in their own lifetime, there is an overwhelming assumption that as soon as the last apostle died:

Common Incorrect Assumptions:

1. All this error magically disappeared after the death of the apostles.

2. Anyone who wrote anything was automatically infallible.

3. The Christians who believed the truth happened to magically be the ones writing, and the only ones at that.

4. There were no false teachers writing or teaching anything.

5. Finding a first century practice or teaching automatically validates it as authentic.

21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;

22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
