Speech Contests

Speech Contest: JHS

Two participants from each school. One to do a speech, the other a recitation.

Speeches: Original speech written by the student in Japanese then translated into English by the JTE/ALT.

Recitations: Speech from a MEXT-approved textbook.

  • Speeches/Recitations must be under 5 minutes.
  • Natural gestures and expressions are encouraged.
  • Winners of the city-wide contests in September continue to the prefectural contest. �(rules should be the same)

Speech Contest: SHS

All Akita Senior High School Oratorical Contest

  • Speeches are written in English by the students and checked by an ALT. They must be between 4:30-5:30 minutes long. Max. 3 students/school.
  • Recitations are taken from popular stories or excerpts of famous speeches. Must be less than 4 minutes. Max. 2 students/school.

All Japan Inter-Commercial High School English Speech Contest

  • Preliminary contest in Akita is held in October
  • Speeches are written in English by the student and checked by the ALT.
  • Recitations can be one of five provided options.
