Finding a Job

Step by step

2 of 14

Finding a job is a job itself

Finding a job requires effort.

Know what job you want

We have taught you a particular skill set in this class

Search for specific position titles such as web developer

Use specific Search terms such as entry level

The fewer buzzwords they use in their description, the better

If there are no search results, remove search terms one at a time

Indeed, dice, monster, glassdoor, linked in

Be Realistic

You probably aren’t going to go work for Google or Facebook

There are plenty of good companies to work for that won’t make you do crazy white boarding algorithm challenges.

Maybe get a job in QA or support that will get you in the door until you hone your skills

Create a mission statement that is specific to the job you are looking for.

Wanting to be hired for an junior level software development position that utilizes my technical skills, education, business experience and passion for solving interesting problems and transforming complication into simplicity.

Resume

In this industry resumes are not as important as other fields of work.

They are electronically scanned, looking for buzz words.

Focus on putting as many keywords in your resume at the top

Unless you have done something really amazing, people don’t care about the bullet points of the jobs you have held

Education should be included at the bottom

You can come up with bullet points like this for any field

Exaggerate

If you don't have wonderful things like that to say then make something up but be able to talk about it and explain it thoroughly. No employer is going to call your ex job and validate that what you put is true

Cover Letter

These are important, they make you stand out. They are not difficult to make. Just write an honest narrative of your life like a mini biography.

Portfolio

It is fine if you have a portfolio which is a link to different websites which you have created but that might not be the only thing that you have built. You may have GitHub repos that are just certain software that can't be seen through a web page

You need to create a detailed readme explaining what your software does how it's useful for solving a problem

Personality

A lot of companies care less about your technical capabilities and more about who you are as a person. If you are socially awkward this can be a challenge

Fake it till you make it.
