Programs at JMD

We have a two-track system, including Logos and English

Students from both programs share Option Classes, PE, as well as leadership/extra curricular opportunities!

English

The standard Alberta Education curriculum is delivered in a classic classroom setting.

Logos

Topics from curriculum areas are covered with a Christian viewpoint. Links are made between the concepts being taught and the Bible teachings.

We acknowledge our students who achieved honors or all ‘one’ effort codes, recognizing students who work hard in all areas of academics each semester with a pizza lunch

Option classes give students the opportunity to experience, participate in and strengthen learning in areas of special interest to them

  • Option courses are offered in a variety of areas ( 14 in total)
    • Some options may have fees
  • Options are semestered, giving students the opportunity to choose up to four options (two per term)
  • Six - 37 minute option afternoon periods a week (three classes a week for each option)
  • Options may combine 7-9 grade levels, however as our numbers grow, we try to create options by grade levels
  • The option handbook is online - A Google Form will be sent out to registered students at the end of April to sign up for option classes (first come, first serve basis)

Art

  • Students experiment with different mediums while learning skill enhancing techniques in drawing, painting, sculpting and mixed-media.

Digital Arts

  • In this art class, students use digital components (including various computer programs and iPad apps) to create unique compositions.
  • Students also contribute to creating our school’s yearbook
  • Student’s work is showcased at District Art Shows, as well as our annual JMD Art Show!

Imagine, Explore, Engage, Create

Concert Band/Percussion & Guitar

  • Performance based options
  • Students expand their musical talents through individual practice and group rehearsals as well as small group and large ensemble performances.

Dance

  • Students get the opportunity to explore several different genres of dance, including jazz, contemporary, ballet, musical theater and hip hop
  • At the end of the term, students get to put into practice what they’ve learned by choreographing their own dance!

Drama

  • Offered as an option for all junior high students
  • Explore movement (mime), speech, theatre studies, technical theatre, improvisation (theatre sports) and acting OR special projects
  • Creative processes and final products are both important as students work together to share experiences and ideas theatrically

Play Production

  • Students may take both Drama and Play Production as they are different courses.
  • Students have an acting role and a tech job (lighting/sound/make up/costumes/stage hand/props/set/stage management

Industrial Arts

  • Students will build and make a large range of projects
  • We will focus on 3D printing and design, woods, metals, �plastics, and button creation.

Food Studies

  • Students participate in a broad range of labs to learn how to bake and cook a variety of cuisines
  • We will focus on baking basics, appetizers and simple meal planning

Advanced Science & Robotics

  • An integrated approach to learning that encourages students to think more broadly about real-world problems. It is about thinking outside the box to solve problems.
  • Some activities include: coding, outdoor activities and hydraulic robots.

FSL

  • Learn to speak, read and write French in a dynamic and engaging environment
  • Explore the diverse Francophone culture

Outdoor Pursuits

  • Outdoor Pursuits offers a wide range of opportunities for students interested in outdoor activities and environmental pursuits.
  • Students will enjoy activities such as golf, archery, orienteering, curling, snowshoeing and outdoor games.

Fit for Life

  • Students will experience a tremendous range of physical �activities and this option will complement the active student
  • Students will compete in activities like volleyball, basketball�floor hockey, spikeball, badminton, kickball, and other wide �games.

Life Management

  • Focuses on the skills and tools needed to proactively address an umbrella of life issues.
  • Students express a need for tangible learning opportunities that will enhance their likelihood of building strong habits pertaining to finances, character building, career opportunities and psychological and physiological comprehension.
  • Students will deepen their understanding of financial management, career navigation, self reflection/wellness, and life tasks specific to their age.
