Explicit teaching is an interactive, structured, carefully sequenced approach to teaching.

Learning in maths is enhanced when students succeed in and feel positive about their learning.

Meaningful problem-solving and investigation experiences, designed to invoke curiosity and engagement.

Develop students’ knowledge, processes, and dispositions in mathematics and statistics.

Over the 4 days of PLD we will be exploring each of these points in more detail and considering what this will look like at each Phase.

Explicit teaching in maths is a structured, carefully sequenced approach to teaching. Manageable steps are clearly and concisely explained and modelled by the teacher. Explicit teaching is strongly interactive.

Positive relationships: Learning in mathematics and statistics is enhanced when students succeed in and feel positive about their learning. If students feel anxious, they have fewer cognitive resources available for learning.

Rich tasks are meaningful problem-solving and investigation experiences, designed to invoke curiosity and engagement. They should relate both to mathematical contexts and wider contexts relevant to the communities, cultures, interests, and aspirations of students.

Communication: Rich, extended interactions are pivotal to students’ development of knowledge, processes, and dispositions in mathematics and statistics. Rich interactions make students’ reasoning visible.
