So why is this important?

Our students are not effectively communicating through the written word. We want to increase our students' love for writing, which will strengthen reading skills and create effective communicators. As shown by the data collected, there were several weaknesses in student performance, including written expression and usage and mechanics. How can we help our students learn to be better communicators of the written word?

Description of Stage

1

Develop Background Knowledge

The purpose is to get students excited about the genre and give background knowledge to the students. This is where the mnemonic strategies are introduced.

2

Discuss the Strategy

This is when teachers examine the strategy systematically by mapping models, reviewing and repairing poor models, and providing deeper discussion of the benefits of using the strategy.

3

Model the Strategy

Teachers model writing using the strategies through Think Aloud techniques. This is used not just in the writing itself, but for all parts of the writing process, from planning, to the writing process, and the scoring process.
