Then, a brown water bug hatches out of the egg.

Next, the bug crawls up on a plant above the water. The hard shell opens.

At last, a dragonfly crawls out and flies away.

Student Objectives:

I will be able to use signal words, such as first, next, then, and at last, to describe a sequence of events.

What To Do:

  • Teacher narrates as students pantomime the actions described in the life cycles of three animals.
    1. Frog Life Cycle ELD Shared Mini-Lesson p. 44
    2. Butterfly Life Cycle ELD Shared Mini-Lesson p. 45
    3. Dragonfly Life Cycle

Whole Group Strategies

  1. Teacher leads movement and narrates. Students sit while pantomiming action with upper body (hands, head, arms)
  2. Teacher leads movement and narrates. students stand in “space bubbles” while using full body movement.
  3. Four students come in front of the class holding printouts of the pantomime cards with images for one of the life cycles. The class puts the students in the correct sequence.

Materials:

  1. Narrative Pantomime Presentation: Life Cycles
  2. Printable Pantomime Cards with Images
  3. Teacher Read-Alouds (Slides 22-24)

What To Do:

  1. Teacher selects one of the Whole Group strategies (right).
  2. Teacher reads the action for each life cycle (See Pantomimes for frog, butterfly, dragonfly).
  3. Students pantomime the actions as they are described.

For additional practice, teachers can refer to “Strategies for Pantomime in the Classroom” in the Narrative Pantomime presentation.

Teacher Read-Aloud Pantomime #1 Frog (Entire Pantomime)

First, the frog is an egg in the water. So make yourself teeny-tiny. Frog eggs are soft and float in the water. So float along with the waves of the water.

Next, the tadpole hatches out from the egg. You have a head and a tail, but no arms or legs! You love to wiggle, wiggle, wiggle when you swim.

Then, the tadpole grows legs and turns into a froglet. Feel your legs grow on your body. You still have a tail, but now you also have legs. So kick your legs while you swim.

At last, you grow into an adult frog. You lose your tail and now you can hop, hop, hop on land. Now stop! Listen! There is a fly nearby. That means dinner! You are going to catch the fly with your long tongue. So get ready. Watch the fly…1, 2, 3, and… gulp! you caught him. Yummy in the tummy!

Teacher Read-Aloud Pantomime #2 Butterfly (Entire Pantomime)

First, a butterfly lays a tiny egg on a leaf. You are in that teeny-tiny egg.

Then, your egg hatches and you are a little caterpillar. You are really hungry, so you look all around for something to eat. Leaves! You eat all the leaves you see. You get bigger, and hungrier, so you crawl to another plant and you eat and eat and EAT!

Next, you yawn. You are sleepy, so you make a case that covers your whole body like a blanket. Inside, you are a pupa. You wait and wait in the hard case.

At last, you look out. You spread your wings. You have changed into a beautiful butterfly! Flap your wings and fly. Now land on a flower.

Teacher Read-Aloud Pantomime #3 Dragonfly (Entire Pantomime)

First, a dragonfly lays its eggs in the water. So you are in a tiny egg at the bottom of a lake.

Then, you hatch out of the egg. You are a brown water bug called a nymph. You have six legs and you like to swim in the water. Swim very fast. Now swim slow.

Next, you grab on to a plant and crawl up, up, up until you are above the water. You wiggle and squiggle until the hard shell on your back cracks open. You are shedding your skin.

At last, you crawl out of your shell and spread your wings. You are a dragonfly! You fly around and land on the water.

  • (Optional) Students fill out a Comparison / Contrast Chart

Student Objectives:

I will be able to discuss how two texts are alike or different.
