Let’s take a closer look at some vocabulary terms that all good digital citizens should know about to help protect them as they interact with others online.
All children have the ability to interact and access the internet, they can even use online platforms to socialize with others. During these online social interactions they might give their opinions about a topic, or make new friendships. Sometimes they can engage in chats or messaging with others online.

As our children engage online they need to be able to spot the “Red Flags,” A red flag feeling is when something happens that the student feel uncomfortable, worried, sad, or anxious. It is important that students know that they can reach out to their parent/guardian or their teacher for support

Your children should be aware that sometimes when they chat with others online they might ask them to share personal images or videos. If they find themselves in this situation students need to know that they need to immediately stop chatting or texting with that person, even if it another student or friend and reach out to a parent/guardian or teacher for support.

As alert digital citizens students can learn to use the internet in a responsible manner and use our digital citizenship skills to stay safe online. They also need to be aware that it is easy for people to hide their real identity online. Children might think they are chatting with a person their age online but it might actually be someone older that is using the chat or messaging tool to befriend and ultimately manipulate the your child into doing something they don’t want to do. This is called “Grooming” and your child need to know that they need to pause and think. If they find themselves in this situation they need to STOP interacting with that individual and immediately reach out to your teacher or parent/guardian for support.
