Missing Mural

Dimensions

5.NBT.7

2 of 24

A mural is a painting, often very large, that is painted directly on a wall.

3 of 24

Sofia’s dad is an artist who paints murals.

He has been asked to help her class create a mural for their school. He gave Sofia a sketch of the mural to show her class. But on the way to school Sofia took it out of her backpack to show a friend and accidentally dropped it in a puddle. She quickly picked it up out of the puddle, but all of the dimensions were smudged and hard to read.

When Sofia and her friend looked closely at the smudged drawing, they were able to identify these numbers and wrote them down on a piece of paper:

Sofia also remembered hearing her dad say that the area of the mural was the smallest area that could be painted.

Debrief: What is the area of the mural?

Are there some dimensions that we can eliminate without having to solve for all possible combinations of dimensions?

Find the area of the mural that Sofia’s dad is going to paint. Remember, that the area of the mural is the smallest product that can be created with these 4 digits and that the length and width were both measured in meters to the tenths place.
