WHEN LIGHT CURVES THROW US CURVE BALLS�

  • Our challenge is to design a tool that allows users to explore how the shape of an asteroid affects the appearance of its light curve.

What is a light curve?

  • Light curve of an asteroid is generated by the reflection of sunlight on the asteroid to earth, utilizing this date by plotting the intensity of light against time is called a light curve, and it can give very useful information about the asteroid and thus the evolution of the solar system.

Tool Super Powers:

  • It can produce the light curve of any 3D model uploaded or from the gallery

  • It can retrieve real light curve measurements from a database

  • It has a wide range of variables such as:
    1. Object distance settings
    2. angular velocity input in each axis
    3. Camera position, light type, and brightness value

  • It calculates an approximated normalized inertia tensor to predict rotation stability

  • It can overlay the simulation light curve to real measurement for live comparison

  • It is fun!

Future Improvement

  • Employ AI to create a pool of 3D models and be able to predict their light curve automatically or even inverse model the 3D shape from a light curve

  • Improve pixel brightness calculation through digital signal analysis

  • Improve GUI interface and make it open-source to the public and space enthusiasts
