Kaitlin Stack Whitney

Collaboration Interests

Assistant Professor

Science, Technology & Society, College of Liberal Arts

There's growing interest within STEM fields to understand the historical and ongoing cultures that shape disciplines and careers. For example, my home discipline of entomology (study of insects), like many biological fields, is grappling with a history of eugenics and white supremacy. Unpacking this is best done with fields that already study them, like science studies (STS). I hope and welcome more collaboration across departments and colleges to put science and technology into context - it can help students think critically about how knowledge is created and with what assumptions - and what other worlds and assumptions are possible.

Skills to share

  • accessibility / a11y / UD / UDL
  • topical: insects, plants, policy, ableism in bio and enviro fields
  • quantitative (statistics, R/R Studio programming, feminist data methods)
  • qualitative (content analysis, critical discourse analysis, case study analysis)
  • Open Education Resources (OER) and open access (e.g. zine) writing and publication

Courses to Integrate

  • Introduction to Environmental Studies (100 level nonmajors survey)
  • Environment and Society (200 level nonmajors)
  • Biodiversity and Society (400/600 upper level/grad course)
