Administering the Musical Aptitude Profile

Gifted and Talented - Talent Domain (Music)

2 of 11

The Musical Aptitude Profile (MAP) can be checked out from Library Services at ESC2.

It can be used as a screener or a full battery of tests to identify students who are gifted or high potential in music.

Each battery (Tonal, Rhythm, Musical Sensitivity) has two or three subtests. One subtest in Tonal or Rhythm can be used to screen for those students who should take the full three batteries.

One subtest takes about 10-15 minutes. A full battery of tests takes 90 minutes, not including breaks.

Administering the MAP

4 of 11

  • 2 CDs are included (one for Musical Sensitivity and one for Tonal and Rhythm).
  • All instructions are given right on the CDs!
  • Tests can be given in any order.
  • Students don’t need to bring anything but a pencil.
  • Elementary students should be given the entire set of batteries on two separate days.

Screening

  • Screening can be done with a whole class at one time.
  • Students scoring in the 95th percentile and above on the screening should take the full battery of tests.
  • Students who are going to take the full battery of tests should take home a parent permission slip (can be found on the APS Gifted and Talented website). https://sites.google.com/aurorak12.org/gifted-talented/forms

Raw Score to Standard Score

Use the scoring mask to quickly count total number of correct answers in each subtest of each battery.

In the example on the next slide, if a student had 30 correct answers in each Tonal subtests 1 and 2; 30 correct in each Rhythm subtest 1 and 2, and 30 correct in each Musical Sensitivity subtest 1, 2 and 3...

...then the student would have the following Standard Scores:

  • Tonal test one - 55, two - 59
  • Rhythm test one - 47, two - 52
  • Musical Sensitivity test one - 80, two - 80, three - 80

Raw Score to Standard Score -then- Standard Score to Percentile

Make sure you have the correct grade level and simply take the Standard Score in each subtest and find the percentile. A 95th percentile or above in ANY battery (all subtests) qualifies a student to begin the gifted identification process.

Next Steps:

Notify your representative on the Music Advisory Council and your school’s GT Leader that one of your students has qualified in the 95th percentile or above. Music Advisory Council members are listed on the next page. GT Leaders in buildings can be found here: GT Leaders in Schools

Students referred by you to the Music Advisory Council for possible gifted identification in music should begin preparing a piece for the semi-annual juried performance assessment.

Students who have never taken a music lesson should not be discouraged, since identification is made from a Body of Evidence and not a single performance.
