Infrastructure Revisited

Challenges that EGUSD is facing:

  • Ongoing cybersecurity concerns
  • Incomplete budget for technology infrastructure
    • Dependence on One Time Funding
  • Aging and “end-of-life” technology components

8

9 of 44

Current Priorities

  • Equipment that is End-of-Life and/or End-of-Support
  • Most critical equipment

E-Rate saves EGUSD approximately $10.3 million

Q: What is E-rate?

Q: Who qualifies?

Q: Why is it important?

  • Category 1 Internet ConnectivitySupports broadband internet services
  • Category 2 Eligible Broadband Internal Connections Supports network communication services
    • Routers and Switches to direct and manage network traffic
    • Wireless Access Points (WAPs) to provide Wi-Fi coverage
    • Network Firewalls for cybersecurity protection
    • Internal Cabling (copper or fiber) and physical Network Racks

Infrastructure Prioritization

13

Scenario: You have enough funding to fully address only THREE priorities over the next THREE years.

Choices

  • Replace aging network equipment
  • Improve cybersecurity protections
  • Refresh classroom technology
  • Expand backup/disaster recovery systems
  • Add technology staffing
  • Increase redundancy and reliability

Questions?

Which three would you fund?

Which would you delay?

What factors influenced your decision?

Teacher Perspective

17

Day in the life

The Teacher Experience

Seamless Daily Tasks

At 7:30 AM, a teacher logs into their laptop. This initiates a series of interactions with informational technology.

  • Authenticate with their authenticator app
  • Check email and Synergy mail
  • Open teaching resources from the ClassLink Portal and Google Classroom
  • Project materials while students work on Chromebooks
  • Limit distractions and push out resources through Lightspeed Classroom
  • Check email again and report a phishing email
  • Check in with the secretary at lunch to see if the PR for Scholastic News has been submitted
  • Start some small group work and submit a ticket when they notice a student is missing from their Lexia roster.
  • Double check their conference schedule in Synergy and print out a couple of missing assignment reports for students since grades are due in a couple of weeks.

Behind the ScenesNone of the teachers actions required them to think about:

  • Active Directory (digital identify)
  • Portal & Single Sign On (SSO) (access to apps)
  • Microsoft 365 (email, calendars, collaboration)
  • Google Workspace Management (Docs, Classroom, Meet)
  • Rostering Systems (student and staff access to instructional tools)
  • Data Integration (information flowing between systems)
  • Device Management (desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, updates, policies)
  • Cybersecurity (phishing protection, security monitoring, MFA)
  • Web Accessibility Requirements (ensuring digital resources are accessible
  • Technology Staff (the people managing, supporting and maintaining it all)

"While Infrastructure connects devices, Informational Technology connects people, systems, data, and services."

Assistive Technology

20

“The AAC students would lose their ‘voice’ and not have a sense of self.”

- Vince Ewing, Assistive Technology Specialist, Special Education

Assistive Technology (AT)

Access to the curriculum

DEVICES

  • Touchscreen Chromebooks for students who cannot navigate by other means
  • iPads with apps and switches for reading, written output, and navigation

Communication (AAC)

Augmentative & Alternative Communication

DEVICES

  • iPads in several sizes as communication devices
  • Apps that let students show what they know

Without AT devices

An adult navigates the device 100% of the time. The student loses independence.

More staff assisting, fewer students working independently or partially independently.

Without AAC devices

Students fall back to 1 to 8 pre-recorded messages, or a paper icon board with no voice at all.

Lose the ability to show what they know, and their sense of self.
