Insight

Refers to the ability to know your emotions and how they affect your thoughts and actions.

Gaining insight is important for one to build self-confidence, self-awareness, and empathy.

Insight helps one recognize personal strengths, areas of growth, self-identities, and how they complement each other in a larger society. Insight also helps students value how others may think and feel differently from themselves.

How to identify emotions?

  • Take your emotional temperature (What feelings am I aware of having? What one stands out the most? When did I start feeling this?)

  • Identify any stressors(What might be triggering this feeling? What is happening/not happening in my day to day life? How is my personal life? How is school? How are my relationships with those around me?

  • Physical signsbody posture, facial expressions, hands (clenched, open, sweaty), stomach (nervous feelings, butterflies), voice (tone, volume, calm, shaky), breathing (slow and steady, increased, fast)

  • Ask yourself “How am I feeling?” but don’t just stick to “okay” or “fine” move past that to identify a true feeling.

  • Being aware of the different emotions we experience allows us to better identify them
