Welcome From

Head of School

Dear Macomb Montessori Academy Families,

Welcome Back!

The start of a new school year is always an exciting time at Macomb Montessori Academy. Classrooms are being prepared, teachers are planning meaningful learning experiences, and families are enjoying the final moments of summer before another year of growth and discovery begins.

As we prepare for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to remind our families that we are more than a school—we are a community committed to helping every student learn, grow, and succeed. Our dedicated team of teachers, paraprofessionals, support staff, custodians, food service team members, and administrative staff works together each day to provide students with a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment.

This year, we will continue to focus on strong academics, building positive relationships, developing student responsibility, and creating a culture where every child feels valued and supported. We believe that when families and the school work together, students achieve their greatest success.

Family partnership is an important part of our success. Regular attendance, communication with your child’s teacher, and staying connected to school updates will help your child have a successful year. Each student will receive a school planner and communication folder during the first week of school. Families are encouraged to check these materials regularly for important announcements, assignments, and school information.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We are excited for a year filled with learning, growth, and achievement. Together, we will continue to Learn, Lead, and Grow as a Macomb Montessori Academy family.

In partnership with you,

Shanina DraughnMrs. Shanina DraughnHead of SchoolMacomb Montessori Academy

Grading System

School Academic Calendar:

A trimester system divides the academic year into three sessions: fall, winter, and spring. Each trimester is approximately 12-13 weeks long.

What is Standards-Based Grading?

Parent Guide

Standards-Based Grading (SBG) involves measuring students on well-defined learning targets or standards (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006). A SBG system includes:

  • Clearly defining learning targets (standards)
  • Clearly describing the different levels of mastery on each standard (rubrics or scales)
  • Intentionally providing multiple opportunities to practice knowledge and skills (classwork and homework)
  • Intentionally designing assessments (quizzes and or/ tests) that accurately measure each standard
  • Frequently communicating student progress via online gradebooks.
  • Formally reporting student’s overall achievement on standards via report cards. The students, the standards, and the assessments all work together to drive the teacher’s instructional practices and shape student learning.

Behavior Expectations

Daily

The teachers will build a classroom community that fosters mutual respect and the acceptance of differences and a classroom that is student centered. The teacher will establish classroom expectations, norms, rules, and procedures to ensure a classroom environment that is conducive for the daily delivery of teacher instruction, student learning, and a classroom community that is safe for every member of the classroom community.

Expectations

Teachers must use the established communication tools, (Remind, Class Dojo, phone, or email) to communicate with parents regarding the student’s corrective behaviors that impede the inability for teachers to teach and students to learn. Teachers must document the interventions used to mediate the corrective behavior. If the interventions are unsuccessful, the teacher must contact the assigned Behavioral Specialist for support.

Behavioral Support

Teachers must inform the Behavioral Specialist/School Leader immediately if there are any major behavioral issues during their class or if they feel that the student needs a follow-up after class. Teachers must document the behavior incident on the Behavioral Referral Form.

BEHAVIOR INCIDENT REPORTING

  1. First, make sure you reference the Safety Escalation Process:
    1. collect all details of the behavioral incident
    2. notify the Behavioral Specialist/School Leader
    3. Initially, the teacher will conduct the Restorative Conference with the student and parent. However, as the behavior continues, the Behavioral Specialist will get involved and hold a Restorative Conference with the teacher, student, and parent to resolve the issue.

  • Teachers must submit all pertinent information on a student referral form. If an incident contains sensitive information that requires a mandated reporter be involved, include the social worker on the incident report along with the School Leader and Behavioral Specialist.

Restorative Circles

History and Context

Restorative Practices help build and sustain a culture of positive thriving relationships, respect, responsibility, and equity, emphasizing the importance of building community and leveraging the ability to repair relationships when harm occurs.

Common Types of Circles

Preventative Circles: Held for the purpose of building relationships and strengthening culture to build a positive culture and create the foundation to effectively address issues that arise.

  • Community Building Circle (Preventative)
  • Celebration Circle
  • Staff Circle

Intervention Circles: Held for the purpose of addressing issues that arise.

  • Healing/support Circle
  • Peace Circle

Expectations:

  • Teacher is responsible for holding a restorative circle daily in the morning.
  • Teachers are expected to have 1:1 (intervention circle) to address ongoing issues in the classroom.
  • Teachers are expected daily to log Restorative Circle in PBIS Teacher Learning Hub in the Google Classroom worksheet.

For more information on these types of circles and how to hold one and how to implement simple restorative practices on a daily basis, see the Restorative Practices Guide and Toolkit.

Restorative Conferencing

Restorative Conferencing serves as a conflict mediation tool. Conferencing should happen after an incident has occurred or there has been a conflict between people, both students and staff, and can be done 1:1 when it involves an individual or with a group if multiple individuals are affected. When conducting a restorative conferencing circle with a group, be sure to follow the guidelines below and hold 1:1 conference before bringing the group together.

Hold a 1:1 pre-conference with persons involved in the situation

  1. Go through the restorative questions (see below) with each person during the 1:1 conference
  2. Once everyone is ready, convene the meeting with all parties involved to discuss the situation
  3. Come up with agreements, write them down, and create an accountability plan.
