Life Science Standards5.L4U3.11 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate evidence about how natural and human-caused changes to habitats or climate can impact populations.

  • Populations of organisms live in a variety of habitats and change in those habitats affects the organisms living there.
  • Changes in an organism’s habitat are sometimes beneficial to it and sometimes harmful. For any particular environment, some kinds of organisms survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

Objectives:

I will describe the characteristics that make the lesser long-nosed bat important to the Sonoran Desert.

I will explore multiple resources to find the answers to my questions.

I will evaluate the impact of human activities on the population of the lesser long-nosed bat.

Driving Questions:

Why is it important to learn the characteristics of bats?

How does the lesser long-nosed bat impact the Sonoran Desert Habitat?

Opening: The Lesser Long-Nosed bat plays an integral part in pollinating the Sonoran Desert. However, they faced extinction in the 1980s until Mexico and the United States placed conservation efforts in place to protect the species. Batcon.org

Your hyperdoc will explore how the Lesser Long-Nosed bat interacts with the Sonoran Desert. You will explore how human actions impact its migratory behavior and pollinating power.

Assessment

Before/During/After lesson ask students to Predict - Explain - Observe. (P) prediction about what will happen, (E) explain why they think that will happen, and then (O) observe what happens.

Complete a think, pair, share exercise with a partner throughout different sections of the hyperdoc.

Use the hyperdoc to check in to see how students are interacting with the lesson at different times.

Differentiation

You could project this hyperdoc and links and allow students to use a white board or science notebook to document their findings.

Students could post a video of their research on a Flip or Padlet.

The hyperdoc has built in choice regarding what type of resource they will use to complete their research.

Allow students to complete at their own pace.

Extension/Enrichment

Students can research and add maps of the Lesser long-nosed bat roosts.

Students could create informational brochures describing their learning.
