Cartoons and Comics Discussion:

  • Do you know enough to understand The Simpsons?
  • What is the role of cartoons in your life? How are some ways artists work in this industry?
  • What are some of the shapes you see?
  • Can you name 3 of the artists mentioned?

4 of 38

Cartoons and Comics: in class discussion:

  • In class, we have photocopies of cartoon characters with plastic covers. Using a marker, draw the basic shapes on top of a cartoon character.

  • Draw ONLY those basic shapes in your sketchbook. Copy only the big shapes, no details!
  • Create 3 or more using the photocopies in class.
  • Finish one if you have time.

6 of 38

Turn basic shapes into cartoons.

Extra Project: Shading on a Toned Surface

  • What’s the difference between a shade and tint?
  • We will use ebony, black and white pencils to create value on brown paper.
    • Color the back of your photocopy with your ebony pencil.
    • Tape it to your brown paper and trace over the lines and major tonal changes. Press into the paper so the graphite transfers.
    • Alternate white and black to blend them together. I apply the white pencil first, then the back one. Ms. Castor prefers to use the ebony pencil first and then the white pencil. Experiment!

Modifications: Specific cases, EIPs, etc.

  • Most projects are already set up for all learners, in the sense that students all students may alter any project in the way that they see fit, just as long as they work in mandatory criteria.
  • Students may alter the drawing part of each lesson by simply creating realistic or abstract shapes to the best of their ability.
  • Students should color or finish the project using the same media as the rest of the class, or any media they are able to.
  • Alternatively, students may write about the project we are doing, what media we are using, why we are doing the project, and how they interpret and modify the project for themselves.
