Brushstroke Process

1. Whole Class: introduce a brushstroke by modeling with an image
2. Group Work: Project another image or video and have students write a sentence using the brushstroke.
3. Share
4. Individual Work*: Project another image or video and have each student write a sentence using the brushstroke.
5. Share
6. Individual Work*: Have students use brushstrokes for revision in their own texts.

Grammatical terms are optional.

Suggestions

1. Discuss the image. “What do you see?”

1. Write at least 2 sentences before writing with the brushstroke.

Then combine.

Step 1: What do you see? What do you assume but cannot see?

Step 1: Teacher writes a sentence and explains participle phrases:

Sitting attentively during English class, I struggled to hear the teacher drone on about irregular verbs because the student in front of me was snoring.

Step 2: Students collaboratively write a sentence.

​

Step 3: Students write a sentence independently.

​

(Steps 2 and 3 could use the same or different slides.)

Embedding Brushstrokes into Students’ Writing

1. Practice

• Use Pathway Brushstrokes app

• Sponge Activity at beginning or end of class: images from teacher or student

• Can incorporate different sentence options:

• Change point of view, tense, brushstroke
• Include more than 1 brushstroke in a sentence*

Share and discuss after all creations. Possibly display.

Social Emotional Learning

1. Display an image that links to SEL.

Have students respond to the image using SEL vocabulary.

Cultural Diversity

• Each student has a week to present a picture each day: image related to family, food, games, country, etc. Students write to the image using a brushstroke. Student presenter collects and saves responses.

​

• On Friday, the student shares a paragraph with the 5 brushstrokes in it. This paragraph is about the student and his/her cultural identity. Students write a sentence in response using a brushstroke if possible. Appositives and strong verbs are very easy.

Family Image

How to pick slides and videos:

1. Need action
2. Be relatable or very extreme
3. Humor is good - this should be fun and playful sometimes
4. Can link to subject/topic being studied.
