Individuals inherit physical characteristics such as eye colour, height, body shape, nose shape and nostrils from their parents.

Individuals also inherit certain medical conditions from their parent(s). These are referred to as genetic or inherited disorders.

GENETIC INHERITANCE

It is important to consider possible effects of the hereditary conditions, ie what are the intellectual, emotional and social effects of these conditions.

Fragile X syndrome

This affects the blood's ability to clot and usually only affects boys. Patients' noses may bleed or sores may bleed for a long time before stopping.

Cystic fibrosis

This is a serious blood condition that mainly affects people of African, Asian, Middle Eastern and Central European descent. Patients with this condition are at greater risk of developing serious infections.

Muscular dystrophy

This condition can cause a variety of physical, behavioral and developmental problems. Patients may have learning difficulties, autistic traits, anxiety and shyness and poor muscle strength along with many other signs and symptoms.

Huntington's disease

This is a muscle wasting disease and it gets worse over time. There are several different types of the disease, the most common being Duchenne MD which mainly affects boys.

Hunter syndrome

This affects the red blood cells causing anaemia, which can lead to overwhelming fatigue, shortness of breath and palpitations.

Haemophilia

This is a metabolic disorder that does not show signs of symptoms until the child is between two and four years old. These can include abnormal bone growth, a large head and protruding tongue and slower development of speech and walking.

Thalassemia

This causes mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system. Patients may have recurrent chest infections and find it difficult to gain weight and grow.

Sickle cell anaemia

This condition stops part of the brain from working. It starts when a patient is between 30 and 50 years old and is usually fatal after a period of about twenty years.

  • it can be difficult for mother and baby to master
  • the father is unable to experience the same intimacy with his child
  • it can be a challenge for both mother and baby it can be painful for the mother
  • it can be embarrassing to breastfeed in front of male relatives
  • the mother needs to consider everything she eats or drinks ( Diet ) when she is breastfeeding because it will be passed on to the baby in the breast milk

  • society can be critical of breastfeeding in public
  • less time as the mother needs to be available to feed the baby every few hours

Health services help individuals to be free from illness, injury and pain, so that they can continue to live a normal life. It is also important for health services to prevent health problems and encourage healthy lifestyles.

The aim of social care services is to improve an individual's quality of life and help them reach their potential. They do this by helping with daily living, listening, encouraging social interaction and providing stimulating activities.
