What is a lazy eye?

A lazy eye (amblyopia) is an eye problem where your brain favours one eye and refuses to use the other. When children are young they learn to use both their eyes. But children with lazy eye only use one so it gets worse and worse and worse. No matter how powerful the glasses are, your lazy eye still will give you bad eyesight.

How lazy eye is caused

Lazy eye is caused by many conditions that prevent your eyes from working together.Or you could have caught a fever or sickness that affected your eyesight. You might even have inherited it from your grandfathers or mum and dad.

first type of lazy eye:Refractive amblyopia

Refractive amblyopia is where one eye can see shorter or longer than the other. This makes it hard for the two eyes to focus together. This starts at an early age so the parent cannot tell that the baby has lazy eye. This gives it time to get worse.Treatment involves glasses or contact lenses.Eye patching the good eye can also help to sharpen the vision of the bad eye

Second type of lazy eye Strabismic Amblyopia

Strabismic Amblyopia, also known as crossed or wandering eye,is when your brain can't support both eyes staying in the same place so one eye will be going left or right while the other is going up or down. When this happens 2 different pictures are being sent to the brain so you see double and the brain is forced to turn off the bad eye in order to see properly.

The experiment

There is a study going on at Auckland University about helping/fixing the lazy eye. In the experiment you have to play a video game called tetris wearing special glasses. These glasses give your bad eye better vision and the good eye weaker vision so that the 2 eyes are equal while you are playing tetris which slowly changes the way your brain works with vision

My side of it

I have done this experiment and I can tell you it works quite a lot. My eyesight has now got 3 times better than it was before. The scientists really need more kids to help out with this groundbreaking experiment. At the end of this presentation I will hand out forms to give to your parents if you want to take part in the experiment.

PLEASE GIVE IT TO YOUR MUM AND DAD
