Guided Event Description

We’re going on a bear hunt. Going on a bear hunt. I’ve got my binoculars. Got my binoculars. I’m not scared. I’m not scared. What are we going to find?

Have you ever wondered what plants, fungi, animals, and insects you are seeing beside the trail? Are you a fan of scavenger hunts or Pokemon Go? While you won’t actually see any bears on Midpen trails, join docent naturalists for a leisurely walk on the Ipiwa and Alpine Pond Loop trails to learn how to photographically “capture” and identify the species you find using the iNaturalist or Seek apps on your cell phone.

This event is family friendly and we encourage kids and their parents to download the free apps and create an account BEFORE attending this event.

Before the Guided Event

Please download the following free apps to your cell phone.

iNaturalist

  • Requires a free account.
  • Geotagged images may be used by scientists as part of their research.
  • AI and other community science participants help ID species.
  • Others can see your posts (unless you set geoprivacy to private).

Seek

by iNaturalist

  • No account needed, but can connect to iNaturalist account.
  • Data stays with you (unless you connect to iNaturalist.
  • AI only is used to ID species. It is not always correct.
  • Others can’t see your images to help ID.

In order for the app to identify species accurately, you need to turn on your phone’s photo location services. See next slide for instructions.

Turn on Photo Locations

Control whether your camera adds location information to geotag images. This is needed for iNaturalist and Seek to help make correct IDs.

iOS:

  1. Open your iOS device's Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security. Click Location services.
  3. Set the Camera permission to While Using the App.

Android:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Privacy. Location Services.
  3. To turn on, set the Camera permission to While Using the App.
