Problem

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm across which are found everywhere: oceans, snow, ice, drinking water, rain.

These pieces could take decades to dissolve completely, and therefore are harmful to marine life.

Microplastics and ocean acidification

3

Ocean water is becoming more acidic because of the extra carbon dioxide it absorbs from the atmosphere. This makes the Ph level of the sea waters decrease, damaging many marine organisms.

Superpowers

Marina can create vorteces with her hands which swirl on the ocean surface collecting all the microplastics. Her gown has a special filter which absorbs the excessive carbon dioxide.

Future opportunities

Marina the Ocean Ballerina could be used to raise awareness in young people on the problem of ocean pollution, teaching them that we all have to be superheroes to help save the marine environment. Marina could even be turned into a cartoon or video game character.
