Plants grow quickly when the weather and water is adequate to make up for them to survive the long dry season.
When water becomes scarce, the grass turns brown to limit water loss and store nutrients in their roots as they await the rainy season.
Certain trees prevent leaves from growing in the dry season. If and when they do grow, they are small and therefore minimize water loss. Water can also be stored in the large trunk.
Some trees also have large roots that can tap into underground resources of water.
Some trees have developed thorns on their branches that stop animals from trying to eat them.
A common tree is the Acacia. Stinging ants make their homes in the hollowed out thorns of Acacia trees, so when an animal bites the tree they not only get a thorn, but also a mouth full of stinging ants.
