The Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm

Challenging Hallmarks of Education

1- Students believe in the promise of future reward from their education.

2- Students will become independent learners

who pursue individual excellence in their

learning.

3- Students arrive with the age-appropriate

background in literacy and can both learn and

demonstrate mastery through print.

Differing Beliefs about Education & Learning Styles

1- Some students come from backgrounds where learning something new is immediately relevant to their lives.

2- Over half of the world’s cultures are collectivistic, so a higher value is placed on interdependence, not standing out individually.

3- Some students, especially those with limited or interrupted formal education, can better express themselves orally, or perhaps they are more used to oral transmission modes of learning.

The Method: Part 1- Listening

STEP 1

STEP 5

During the next class, students listen to the podcast episode again with specific focus on the selected vocabulary words and phrases.

STEP 2

Worksheets are created including: Lead-in questions,

Gist, Vocabulary & Detailed Comprehension Questions

STEP 4

Students are asked to summarize the main idea of the podcast and post it on our Padlet.

STEP 3

Students listen to the podcast in class twice

The Method: Part 2- Producing

STEP 6

In groups, students enter the meanings of the words and expressions on a Google doc according to the context of the podcast episode, then terms are clarified for the whole class.

STEP 10

Finally, at the beginning of the following class, the latest episode containing all the students’ recordings is played for students to comment on.

STEP 7

HW task recording a 2 to 3 min podcast episode summarizing the content of the week’s episode, discussing their opinion, arguing for or against the perspective of one of the characters, or personal experience with the situation in the episode

STEP 9

During the next class, students are asked to write and perform conversations using at least half of the expressions from the worksheet.

STEP 8

Individual feedback on recordings via email: overall comments, language correction & well-used phrases.

3- Combine Familiar and Unfamiliar Learning Processes

1- Listen to podcasts with topics relevant to different aspects of their lives (health, academics, finance)

2- Work together to create in-class conversations & podcast episodes

3-Podcasting connects both written and oral methods of learning as students often write scripts in preparation for the recordings
