Welcome to 5th grade!

Classroom Handbook
Mrs. McBride Grade 5
Hello! I am so happy that we get to spend this year together! The following paragraphs detail some important information, procedures, and expectations that will help our classroom operate more efficiently. We will go over these together in class during the first couple weeks of school and occasionally as the need arises. If you have any questions, please ask me.
Class Website: https://sites.google.com/valesd.org/mcbride5/home
Our class website has LOTS of information on it. Some of this information is: a school calendar, links to lunch menus, lesson plans, links to student websites, Scholastic book ordering link, and more.
Contacting the Teacher: Parents/Guardians, feel free to call 541-473-3291, email me at jill.mcbride@valesd.org, or text me via Remind at anytime and I will respond as soon as possible. Email or Remind are usually the quickest way for me to respond during the school day. Remind will be my primary method of communication for reminders, information, etc… If you are not receiving Remind messages occasionally, please let me know and I will get you signed up.
Your child will have multiple teachers this year and each teacher has a Remind account, email, and phone number. If you need their contact information, the office is happy to get you in contact with them.
Please call the office regarding same day transportation changes, or any information needed for your child, as I do not always see emails or texts before students are dismissed for the day.
Switch classes: 5th grade will be switching classrooms for Math, Reading, and Science. Mrs. Morrison will be teaching math, Mrs. DeLong will be teaching reading, and I will be teaching science. Students are expected to have a folder and pencil pouch to take basic supplies (paper, pencils, erasers) to classes each day.
Assignments:
Daily assignments should be turned in the same day. If a student needs to finish class work, they are responsible for taking it home for homework and turning it in by the beginning of the next class day. Work that is not turned in on this time frame will be considered late. Points may be deducted for late work.
Larger assignments or projects will be given more time. I will give students the due date on the assignment/rubric page of larger projects.
Student Progress and grades: Parents or guardians can check their child’s progress on ParentVue through Synergy, the Vale School District’s attendance and grading system. The office has login information for this website if you need it.
I will send a progress report home about once per month, . Parents/Guardians, please review, sign, and then return the progress report with your child to school. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Any missing work from the progress report is due by the date given on the progress report. After that it will not be accepted and will be marked as “Not turned in” on the progress report. I try to coordinate progress reports to come out before Part Fridays, so students have the opportunity to come in during Part Friday to get caught up on their missing assignments. A list of Part-Fridays are included on the last page.
Grading: Our grading system is as follows:
A – 90-100% D – 60 – 69%
B – 80-89% F- 59 % or lower
C – 70-79%
Assignments with a grade lower than 60% are expected to be redone, however any assignment except for tests and quizzes may be redone for the average grade. I believe that we learn a lot by correcting mistakes. There is a limited time for making corrections, so please correct any assignments as soon as possible. I calculate the new score by taking an average of the new score with the old score.
Homework: Normally, I will not assign homework. Students will be given plenty of time to complete assigned work in class if they use their time effectively. Occasionally students may have homework if a project requires it, or if a student needs extra time to complete the work. Time will be given each day in class for silent reading as well, however some out of class reading may be needed to meet reading goals, depending on your child’s individual reading abilities. If there are circumstances that I need to be aware of, please let me know.
Absences: Please let the office know if your child is absent. If a student is absent, I am happy to send classwork home with enough notice given for me to prepare it. Assignments from absences are due within a reasonable amount of time after the absence. Generally this is the number of days absent plus one day. For example, if a student misses 1 day, they have 2 days upon their return to school to complete the work. Part Fridays are an excellent time to complete missing assignments. Please check Parent Vue to keep updated on your child’s grades and possible missing work. As stated above, I will send progress reports with missing assignments listed a couple days before each Part Friday.
Conferences: Formal conferences will be scheduled twice per school year. Notes will be sent home with students and on Remind when conferences are coming. Sign up early if you have a preference for a time. Informal conferences can be scheduled with me whenever the need arises. Please don’t feel like you need to wait for conference time to discuss your child’s needs, progress, etc… with me. I will do the same.
Student expectations: Students are expected to come to school to learn and contribute to the wellbeing of all, the classroom, and school. The three main expectations in my classroom are: show respect, be kind, and work hard.
Students that meet these expectations and follow school and classroom rules are rewarded with positive feedback, privileges, and special recognition.
Students that do not meet expectations or follow the rules will be:
Chromebook/Internet use:
Each student will be assigned a chromebook for use in my classroom. Students must adhere to the district usage agreement, must agree to handle chromebooks with care, and use them appropriately. Misuse will result in a student being restricted from chromebook use, either temporarily or permanently, depending on the severity /frequency of the misuse.
Water Bottles: Students need to bring a water bottle to school for PE as well as in the classroom. There are water bottle filling stations with filtered water available.
Birthday and holiday parties:
If your child would like to bring treats to share for their birthday, they are welcome to do so, just please let me know your plans if you are sending anything in to school. I will send a letter once I know of allergies that prohibit certain foods from being in class. Latex of any kind is not allowed at school, including latex balloons.
In past years, our class has celebrated Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter. If there are other holidays that your family celebrates and would like to include in our calendar, please let me know.
In addition, if your family does not celebrate holidays, please let me know and we will make arrangements.

PENCILS! Pencils tend to be one of the biggest struggles in 5th grade. I’m not sure if it is because of switching classes, but nonetheless it is an issue.
3 dozen pencils sounds like A LOT, but it truly depends on the responsibility of your child. Some students run out of pencils by December while others have them left over in May. If you feel your child can keep track of their pencils, they may not need that many.
