The following are PROPOSED elective choices. They are NOT definitive and will be dependent on the number of requests and course scheduling needs. Oakdale will attempt to give students 2 of their choices, but there is no guarantee.

If you do not turn in a form, you will be placed in your specials classes based upon the size of classes instead of what you would like to take. The classes do fill up, so those forms turned in on time will take priority. Forms are due by Friday, March 27th.

Art (6-8)

Mrs. Carol Walsh

Semester Course

Art teaches students to be creative and develop critical thinking skills, learning new techniques and developing their own. They will be studying present-day artisans in pottery, glass, drawing, and painting. �

Band (6th)

Mr. Scott/Mrs. Harouff

Year long Course

Continue working on music fundamentals that was started in 5th grade. We will be working in book two of the Essential 2000 series. 6th grade band students will audition for the Cimarron Valley Honor Band and also play a solo or ensemble at contest. They will have two concerts and will compete at the Sandy Lake Music Festival in Dallas. Classes will be divided: brass/percussion and woodwinds. A few 6th grade band students may get to play in the jazz band.�

Band (7-8)

Mrs. Scott/Mrs. Harouff

Year long Course

Advanced fundamentals and advanced music. The students will audition for the Central Oklahoma Directors Association (CODA) Honor Band or the Cimarron Valley Honor Band. They also have the opportunity to play a solo or ensemble at contest. Both bands will participate in the Holiday and Spring concerts. Contests will include: Santa Fe Contest Clinic, the OSSAA District Contest, Sandy Lake Music Festival in Dallas. The jazz band will be made up of 7th and 8th graders as well as the pep band.�

Choir (6-8)

Semester Course

Middle School Choir offers an opportunity for students who enjoy making music and performing. Students will become better musicians through learning proper singing techniques, singing 2 and 3 part harmonies, exploring music theory, and learning sight reading skills. Choir will perform at school activities and also perform a concert outside of school. ��

Computer Tech 1

(7-8)

Mr. Boatman -Sem. Course

An in-depth look at computers and computer applications. Students will learn the basics of word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and publishing software. The goal is to build familiarity and skills with computer applications so students can produce work at the high levels required in today's technological world. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of online resources designed to increase knowledge and ability.��

Computer Tech 2

Continue to examine the computer/systems and delve into greater understanding of using the computer in our educational and daily lives. To prepare for our next steps as we get ready to enter high school, we will be looking at computer use with a more critical eye.��

Speech & Drama

(6th)

Mrs. Harkins -Sem. Course

This class provides the opportunity for your child to see if they are interested in Plays/Musicals for the 7th/8th grades. Class includes: 1 interview speech, 1 personal experience speech, group pantomimes and individual pantomimes using a different accent or emotion game, radio play, television play, puppet play, and play on class stage with full costumes and line memorization presented to another class. ����

At the end of the semester they will perform a play with full costumes and sets for MS and parents. Participants must be available during the dates of the play performances (TBD).�����

Musical (7-8)

At the end of the semester, students will perform a Broadway Jr. Musical with full costumes and sets. It is strongly recommended that highly-interested students also take choir in the fall semester, but will not be required if there are schedule limitations. Participants must be available during the dates of the performances (TBD) and sign a commitment release.������

PE (6-8)

Mrs. Andrews/Mr. Booker -Sem. Course

Our PE program will incorporate fitness testing, games and weekly workouts. Provides an opportunity for students to better their work ethic and their teamwork skills. Required to bring a change of clothes and proper footwear to change into and out of every day. Games are for different skill levels and interests in hopes of encouraging future exercise.�������

Spanish (8th)

-Year long Course

For High School credit (HS Span 1). This is a very rigorous course that requires a high level of organizational skills, self-motivation, and maturity to be successful. � ������

Leadership (8th)

-Semester Course

Students plan and implement all of the 8th grade service projects and fundraisers. Project-based with mini-units on leadership. �� ������

Yearbook (8th)

-Year long Course (by application only)

This class produces Oakdale’s yearbook which will cover basic journalism skills, photography, and computer skills. Please sign up for yearbook if you want to take it, but we will only accept those who apply. Get your application submitted by March 27th.��� ������
