Having clear expectations for students to understand expectations of work will be assigned, how it can be completed, and when it can be completed.

Expectations should be both written and verbal, with appropriate scaffolds in place to guide students to proper completion of tasks

In terms of workflow, appropriate checkpoints so students can understand the proper path to completion of the assignment, as well as actionable steps for improvement can be important in the success of the students

Consistency is key for students so that there are no surprises in their work completion and the potential grades they can receive

  • They should know why they are learning the material and they should know when and where is comes in to play in relation to the other learning they have already done for that class. Make sure your online students know when they should be transitioning to the next thing and they have the proper scaffolds in place to be prepared for the next part.
  • The most important part would be to make sure that you are still giving them the same amount of think time as you would in the classroom and you are still questioning them like you would in the classroom. Make sure that you do not forget about them and you are checking in with them like you would if they were right in front of you, how can you “walk around the room” virtually?
  • HYPERDOCS → maybe more for middle school topics? How can you then write on the doc

  • Asynchronous and Synchronous Learning routines:
    • Set clear expectations and tell students how they are going to be assessed.
    • Make sure that you have linked out all the proper materials in the right sequential order
    • Give them clear and proper transitions that also include the right amount of scaffolding
    • Make sure the still use questioning, but make sure to monitor and provide feedback in an appropriate time
  • Within these routines, you should make sure the students know how to contact the teacher should they need help, and they should know when, where and how to reach the course materials and assignments. Make sure they know what the expectations are once they are in the online classroom, like do they need their camera on, or do they just need to participate in discussions.
  • Just like in the classroom they should know what they are being graded on and how they are being graded. They should know what the agenda is for the day and they should know where to find it on your online platform.
