Mikaela Lee
Helping students achieve success in all areas of learning is very important to educators! Mathematical and literacy proficiency is searched for in the classroom.
Educational Standards provide teachers with information of what students should be learning. But, teachers will use their own philosophy of teaching to implement these standards.
The Common Core State Standards
These standards were created by school administrators and other educational individuals as a collaborative effort. The main goal was to provide a set of guidelines and expectations to help students succeed in the learning process.
Each subject area contains a different set of goals for students to develop and master a skill:
Mathematics: fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
English: writing, comprehension
The Importance of L I T E R A C Y
Literacy is the skill that connects between all the different subject areas!
Efficient writing, reading, and listening allow students to learn to make connections in social studies! Students can connect to people and other topics learned in the classroom.
Connections to history can be made by asking questions!
Examples:
Can you tell me an important historic event?
Tell me about your family!
Where did you grow up?
What places would you like to visit?
These kinds of questions are important because they bring up new ideas and information that can relate to social studies. Also, questions and answers can help students learn new things and give them an opportunity to share knowledge.
Integrating the Curriculum
A major focus on making sure the curriculum is put into place is by making meaningful connections! This means that teachers should focus on connecting all of the topics they teach to their students, and this will promote student interest. Students will become excited about learning something new and engage in the new lesson by answering questions.
Students and The Curriculum
It is crucial for educators to work together to ensure that the curriculum involves a high level of student engagement and meaningful learning. Students will only master the desired skills by becoming active participants in the classroom.
Standards need to be aligned with integrating the school curriculum.
Pedagogical Values also need to be considered by the use of strategies such as:
