I really enjoyed exploring all of the beautiful life cycle models you shared!

Scientists, our question to investigate was: What patterns can we observe in the life cycles of animals and plants?

We are investigating this question to help us better understand our anchor phenomenon of the life cycle of a butterfly.

We observed videos of a frog, chicken, and pepper plant’s life cycle. We read books about life cycles, and each of us drew a model of a life cycle. We all just gallery walked our models of life cycles to look for patterns. What patterns did you notice? Record the patterns students notice in the “What We Figured Out” section of the Phenomena Wall.

Lesson 2: Extension

Great work recognizing patterns of life cycles! All life cycles are unique, but they share birth, growth, reproduction and death. Before we go out into the schoolyard and record observations of our chosen plants and animals, we’re going to practice nature journaling in the classroom.

In the center of each of your tables, there are found natural objects from the playground. Students could gather these objects as a class for the center of their table before this exercise (pieces of plants, rocks…any found natural object) that they will return to the playground when they go outside with their nature journals.

John Muir Laws is going to take us through an exercise called ‘I notice, I wonder, It reminds me of…” We will practice in the classroom, before we complete this exercise outside in our natural journals for our chosen plant or animal.

First, we’re going to watch the video of John Muir Laws demonstrating what it looks like to use ‘I notice, I wonder, It reminds me of…” in our nature journals.

Let’s watch the first few minutes to learn an observation exercise and then try it. Play video to minute 3 and then have students complete the observing out loud exercise in their table groups with their found natural objects.

Now, let’s learn about and practice the notice and wonder exercise. Play video until 6:20 and then have students go outside and ask and write down as many questions as they can in 1 minute. Then, they have 2 minutes to share.
