Key Principles Guiding Ethical Research

  1. Informed consent
  2. Respect for persons
  3. Privacy and confidentiality
  4. Avoiding harm
  5. Research integrity
  6. Justice

Consent Form Information

  • Purpose of the study: The consent form should clearly state the purpose of the study and explain why the participant is being asked to participate in the interview or focus group.
  • Procedures: The consent form should describe the procedures that will be followed during the interview or focus group. This may include the length of the session, the types of questions that will be asked, and any materials that will be used.
  • Confidentiality: The consent form should explain how the participant's personal information will be kept confidential. This may include a description of how data will be stored, who will have access to the data, and how it will be used.
  • Risks and benefits: The consent form should explain any potential risks or benefits associated with participation in the study. This may include physical or emotional risks, as well as any benefits that may result from participating.
  • Voluntary participation: The consent form should emphasize that participation in the study is voluntary, and that the participant has the right to withdraw at any time without penalty.
  • Contact information: The consent form should provide contact information for the researcher or research team in case the participant has any questions or concerns.
  • Signature and date: The consent form should include a space for the participant to sign and date the form, indicating that they have read and understood the information provided.

Group Activity: Mock Interview

  1. Mock interview (10 minutes for each student): Have students pair up with another student, not in their group. Each student will have the opportunity to be the interviewee and the interviewer. They will follow this process:
    1. Interviewer asks questions: The interviewer will begin by introducing themselves and their research questions/topic, and then will ask 3-4 of their interview questions.
    2. Interviewee debriefs the interview: After the mock interview, the interviewee will share their experience, and they will share feedback on the interview questions and the interviewing process.
    3. Repeat the process: Repeat the mock interview process by switching roles. The interviewee will become the interviewer and vs. versa.
  2. Revise interview questions: After the mock interviews, students will gather with their YPAR project group and revise the interview questions based on the feedback received. If students do not complete their revisions during class, ask them to finish on time before they are scheduled to interview participants.

How does this lesson relate to my learning in the class?

  1. YPAR Learning Standard:
  2. Understand the process of collecting data through interviews and focus groups.
  3. Learn how to design effective interview and focus group questions.
  4. Develop an understanding of the ethical considerations in conducting interviews and focus groups

Take Home Assignment

  1. Take a look at their YPAR Timeline and to make adjustments to any of the dates and people’s names responsible for any tasks.
  2. Review and Revise Interview Questions.

A picture is worth a thousand words

A complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image, namely making it possible to absorb large amounts of data quickly.

SlidesCarnival icons are editable shapes.

This means that you can:

  • Resize them without losing quality.
  • Change fill color and opacity.
  • Change line color, width and style.

Isn’t that nice? :)

Examples:

Now you can use any emoji as an icon!

And of course it resizes without losing quality and you can change the color.
