Swim Team vs. Swim Lessons

The Difference

  • The Sea Dragons Swim Team is not a program for swim lessons
  • The difference is that swim lessons are designed primarily to teach kids

how to swim for the purposes of water safety

  • Swim team is designed to teach kids who are already comfortable enough in the water how to swim more efficiently

The Requirements

  • We require that all swimmers joining our team be proficient enough to swim on the surface of the water for one event length of the pool.
  • One event length of the pool for children 8 years old or younger is 25 yards
  • One event length of the pool for children who are 9 years old and older is 50 yards

Setup/Clean Up

Setup: Arrives at 3:30pm and ensures Aquatic Center is appropriately prepared for Meet

Clean up: Stays after Meet completion to ensure pool facilities are left in good condition

Strokes & Turns Judge

Must have knowledge of all 4 strokes, be comfortable disqualifying a swimmer who makes and illegal stroke, and have the best position on the pool deck to see all swimmers in each heat. (offering clinic and happy to do individual trainings a parking spot comes with this)

Volunteer Positions - Each Meet

13 of 29

Volunteer Positions -

Each Season

Referee

Ensure that the meet is contested fairly, has authority over all officials and can assign and instruct them, settles disputes

Clerk of Course

Volunteers at the Clerk of Course will make sure every swimmer is organized correctly in their appropriate heat and lane ready for their event to be called. They will do this using the heat sheet.

Starter

Provides fair start for all swimmers., set the pace of the meet

Head Table Worker

Assists with time verification before computer entry

Head Timer

Responsible for all other timers at a meet, make sure each lane has proper equipment, ensures timers understand procedure, serves as backup

Announcer

Reads/announces through the intercom system times of warm ups, what events are being called to clerk of course, and other important meet information

Volunteer Coordinator

Ensures all positions filled for a meet, checks in volunteers, keeps track of volunteer sign-ups

These positions are filled each season and are only required at home meets. Individuals who fill these positions typically volunteer for the entire meet for every home meet.

14 of 29

Volunteer Commitment

  • Approximately 60+ volunteers are needed for a home meet
  • Meets will halt if volunteer positions are not covered
  • Families are asked to volunteer for 3 halves during the season
  • Commitment expectation is in registration agreement - a fee of $150 per meet half will be assessed for an unmet volunteer commitment
  • Commitment can be done by parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings (minimum of 12 yo), family friends…anyone that can fulfill the duties of the position
  • Commitments can be shared between individuals
    • Up to the individuals to coordinate
    • Mom covers for beginning events of the half, dad replaces mom to cover remaining events
  • Families will be assigned in worse case scenario…we would like to avoid this situation
  • Sign-ups will be opened when the meet schedule is finalized
  • Champs volunteer hours will be handled separately for families whose children qualify

15 of 29

Swim Meet

Attendance and Relays

ATTENDANCE

  • While not required, the team’s goal is for each child registered for the team to attend at least 2 swim meets during the season
  • Not attending swim meets does not exempt families from their Volunteer commitment to the team
  • CAL guidelines indicate children must attend at least 2 swim meets to qualify for Champs at the end of the season.

RELAYS

  • If your child is entered into a relay and leaves the meet early, they will not be able to swim relays for the rest of the season or at Champs
  • Leaving prior to a relay leaves the coaches in a position to have to “scratch” the relay and is unfair to the children who stayed to swim
  • If you do not want your child to swim a relay, please indicate this in the notes section when you declare your swimmer for a meet
