CHAPTER 1: TOBIT’S BACKGROUND

Tobit currently lives in Assyria where he was carried off into captivity by the Assyrian King Shalmaneser as described in the Book of Kings II.
Tobit came from the Kingdom of Israel, the northern part of the divided kingdom that had broken off from Judaea after the revolts that occurred in Kings 1 under Solomon’s Son Rehoboam.
Tobit is a very charitable man, and remained faithful to the Jewish God even though he lived in the Kingdom of Israel.
Tobit had a wife named Hannah, and a son Tobias.
While in Assyria Tobit becomes an agent to King Shalmander, buying and trading for him.
Sometimes when Israelites were killed Tobit would collect their bodies and bury them. One day Tobit is caught and sentenced to death, but flees.
Eventually the King who searching for him is killed, and his son Esarhaddon comes to the throne.
After coming to the throne he appoints Tobit’s nephew Ahiqar to be royal treasurer.
After becoming treasurer Ahiqar sends for Tobit.

CHAPTER 2: TOBIT IS BLINDED

After coming out of hiding Tobit is reunited with his family.
Tobit continues to bury deceased Jews, and people joke that he hasn’t learned his lesson.
One night while sleeping some birds who were resting above him, poop in his eyes and he went blind.
His Nephew ahiqar and his wife take care of him for the next few years.
One day his wife comes home with a goat which she had receive as a gift and Tobit believes it to be stolen. They get into an argument.

CHAPTER 3: TOBIT AND SARAH’S PLEAS

Tobit cries to the lord for mercy.
Sarah is introduced into the story. She is in great distress because she is widowed to seven husbands, and never has had children with any of them, and it is because she is possessed by a demon. She also cries to the Lord for mercy.
The Lord hears their prayers and sends an angel to cure Tobit of his blindness, and make Sarah the wife of Tobit’s Son Tobias.

CHAPTER 4: TOBIT’S WISDOM

CHAPTER 5: TOBIT’S DEPOSIT

Tobit recalls he has money deposited at a bank from days when he was an agent for the King of Assyria, and tell his Son.
Tobit gives his Son the receipt for the deposit, and hires another man to go with him.
Tobit’s wife Hannah is sad about her Son leaving, not wanting to risker her Son’s life for money. Tobit comforts her and encourages her that he will return for there is an angel protecting him.

CHAPTER 6: TOBIAS’S JOURNEY

Tobias heads out on his journey. One night while camping at the Tigris a fish almost eats Tobias, but the angel tells Tobias to grab the fish at the last moment.
The angel then instructs Tobias and his companion to eat the fish but save the heart, liver and gall, for they can be used to cure blindness and perform exorcism.
Later on the journey the Angel instructs Tobias to stop at his Uncle Raguel’s, where he will marry his daughter Sarah (from chapter 3).

CHAPTER 7: TOBIT SECURES SARAH AS WIFE

After meeting his Uncle Raguel he offers to be Sarah’s husband. Raguel is pleased with the offer and agrees.

CHAPTER 8: TOBIAS PERFORMS EXORCISM ON SARAH

CHAPTER 9: TOBIAS COMPANION RETRIEVES DEPOSIT

Tobias instruct his companion Raphael who his father sent with him to finish the journey to retrieve the deposit, for he a cannot leave his Uncle’s home.
Raphael retrieves the deposit and brings it to the wedding.

CHAPTER 10: TOBIT DISTRESS OVER TOBIAS

After sometime passes and Tobias has not returned home, Tobit begins to worry about Tobias.
Hannah also worries even more then Tobit.
Tobias speaks to his Uncle about returning home, and after some persuasion he is allowed to leave with his Wife Sarah and return home.
Raguel give him half of what he possesses.

CHAPTER 11: TOBIAS RETURNS HOME

CHAPTER 12: TOBIT’S WISDOM

CHAPTER 13: TOBIT’S PRAYER

CHAPTER 14: TOBIT INSTRUCTS TOBIAS

Tobit instruct Tobias to move to Media, because he believes Nineveh where they currently live will be destroyed.
Tobit also predicts the Jews captivity in Babylon and their eventual return to Jerusalem.
