• This is time to play… not stay safe with what you know.

• Try out lots of different effects, styles and mark making.

• Say to yourself….. what if I do this? What if I add this?

Push your ideas and experimentation…..keep going until you wreck it….

​

• In doing this we better understand the characteristics of the materials and what we like and dislike.

This means you will be much better at writing about your findings because you really explored.

And it will help you develop your own style

How to Annotate your experimentation in Unit 1

• What is the intention of the experiment?
• Discuss the characteristics of the materials you are working with?
• Discuss the techniques you are employing
• What did you learn?
• How did you feel about it?
• What was the most difficult thing?
• What would you do differently?
• How could you use these materials and techniques to creative your own subject matter and ideas on the topic of ‘Imagination?

If you are not here, these may help explain the process that I am demonstrating to the class.

Today (Wednesday 31st January)

1. Explore 1- Intaglio Etching - Watch printing demonstration
2. Complete prepping your etching ready for printing
3. Add annotation specifically about drypoint etching (scratching in marks) - See annotation and the materials handout on the previous slide: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aO_J2AXDV2OIPv2jWvN4z8cm6n-TvTyTdKTDies6s2o/edit
4. Print one copy of your etching using wiping back and colour experimentation.
5. Clean plate and add more marks using different tools.
6. Print once more- vary the way you use colour and wipe back.
7. Complete your annotation of the printing process including all your prints, the plate taped in and photographs of you doing the process. (for authentication)

‘Imagination’ Lino face

​

1. Sketch up portrait ideas. Make it unusual and interesting as this is just for play to see what lino carving can do.
2. Transfer portrait onto linoleum.
3. Use sharpies to work out lines and textures.
4. Carve where it is white.
5. Cut out figure from background.
6. Print on different surfaces.
