Humbleness

قد علّم الأباء الدائمو الذكر أن الأتعاب الجسدية هى سبيل التواضع وأساسه . أما أنا فأقول : الطاعة وإستقامة القلب هما اللتان تقاومان الغرور بشكل طبيعى . القديس يوحنا الدرجى

The fathers have taught that the physical hardship is a way to modesty and its basis, whereas I say: Obedience and straightfullness of the heart resist pride naturally. (Saint Youhanna El Daragi)

إن الكثيرين منا يدعون أنفسهم خطاة وربما نكون كذلك لكن القلب المتواضع يُختبر بالإهانة .

Many of us call themselves sinners, and may be we are, but the humble heart is tested by mistreatment.

التواضع والسعى للوصول إلى التواضع ومدح التواضع هى ثلاثة امور مختلفة فالأول من شيمة الكاملين ، والثانى من شيمة المطيعين الحقيقيين، وأما الثالث فهو من شيمة عامة المؤمنين . (القديس يوحنا الدرجى)

Humbleness, seeking it, and praising it, are three different things. The first is a characteristic of the perfect people; the second is a characteristic of the real obedient people; whereas the third is of the general mass of believers.

حدث أن أغلق أخ على نفسه باب قلايته زمانا يسيرا فقاتلته أفكار مكتومة وأحلام سمجة فبعث إلى شيخ قديس يستشيره فى ذلك فأجابه الشيخ قائلاً : إن كنت تريد أن تخلص ففر من شيطان العظمة وإجعل لك قليل .. لأن المذلة تهلك العظمة وتبعدها ولا تدع أحدا يخدمك بل إخدم أنت نفسك وأنت تخلص بمعونة الله والأن فلا تغلق الباب الخشب بل بالحرى إغلق باب لسانك.

It happened that a brother monk locked himself up in his cell for a time and he was attacked by self-conscious thoughts and unpleasant dreams. So he went to a pious elder to consult him about this. The pious elder said: “ If you want to be saved from this, run away from the devil of arrogance and own a little because living humbly destroys the vain glory of life and drifts it away. Also, do not let anyone serve you, but serve yourself and you will be saved by God's support. Now, do not lock up the wooden door, but rather lock up your tongue’s door. ”

A pious elder said: If we do not get attacked, then we should be very humble knowing that God, due to His knowledge of our weakness, has lifted up the attack. If we get proud of this, He will remove His shield and thus we will perish.

قال شيخ : إذا لم يأت علينا قتال حينئذ ينبغى لنا أن نتضع جداً عالمين أن الله لمعرفته بضعفنا رفع عنا القتال وإن إفتخرنا يرفع عنا ستره فنهلك .

قال شيخ : اريد أن أكون مغلوباً بإتضاع أفضل من أن أكون غالبا بإفتخار .

A pious elder said: I prefer to be defeated because of humbleness than to conquer because of proudness.

A brother said to Anba Timothaus: “ I always see myself in the hands of God. ” So the latter responded: That is not strange, but what is stranger is that one sees himself below all creations.

قال أخ لأنبا تيموثاوس : إنى أرى نفسى بين يدى الله دائماً فقال له : ليس هذا بعجيب ولكن الأعجب أن يبصر الإنسان نفسه تحت كل خليقة .

قال شيخ : إن أردت أن تنجح فى إطفاء الغضب والرجز فإقتن الإتضاع ولتكن لك طاعة ورجاء فى كل أحد لأن الغضب والرجز يسوقان الإنسان إلى الهلاك ويبعدانه عن الله أما الإتضاع فإنه يحرق الشياطين والطاعة هى التى جاءت بإبن الله وسكن فى البشرية والإيمان خلص الناس والرجاء لا يخزى وأما المحبة فهى التى تدع الإنسان لا يسقط ولا يبتعد عن الله فالذى يريد أن يخلص، عليه أن يقطع هواه فى كل شئ ويقتنى الإتضاع وليكن الموت بين عينيه .

A pious elder said: “ If you want to succeed in putting off anger and furiousness, acquire humbleness, show obedience, and have hope in every person, because anger and furiousness lead a person to destruction and pull him away from God. Humbleness burns the devils, and obedience is what brought the Son of God to earth and He dwelt inside humankind, and the belief in Him saved people, and hope does not let down or fail anyone.

Whereas, love does not let one fall and stray from God for whoever wants to be saved, has got to cut off his desire in everything and acquire modesty and place death before his eyes.

قال شيخ : الإتضاع خلص كثيرين بلا تعب وتعب الإنسان بلا إتضاع يذهب باطلا لأن كثيرين تعبوا فإستكبروا وهلكوا .

A pious elder said: “ Modesty, effortlessly, saved a lot of people and the effort of man without modesty is in vain, because many exerted effort that resulted in making them proud and accordingly they ended in hell.”

قيل إنه كان يوجد شيخ له تلميذ جيد ومن الملل كان الشيخ يخرجه خارج الباب ويزدرى به فكان التلميذ يمكث جالسا خارجا ولما فتح الشيخ الباب فى اليوم الثالث وجده جالساً فأدى له الشيخ مطانية وقال له : يا ولدى إن تواضعك وطول آناتك قد غلبا شرى وصغر نفسى فهلم الأن إلى الداخل ومنذ الأن كن أنت الشيخ وأنا التلميذ .

It was said that there was an old pious man who had a good student. Out of boredom, the old man used to send him out of the cell and insult him, but the student used to remain sitting outside at the door. When the old man opened the door on the third day, he found his student still there sitting. So he fell down on his knees before him (made a metanya) and said: “ My son, your modesty and patience have conquered my evilness and feeling of superiority, so come inside and from now on, be the teacher and I will be the student "

الحصان المنفرد كثيرا ما يظن أنه يعدو بسرعة لكنه إذا سار مع أحصنة اخرى عندئذ يحس ببطئه وبلادته . (القديس يوحنا الدرجى)

A horse who is running alone thinks that it runs fast, but if it runs with other horses, then it realizes its slowness and sluggishness.

قال القديس باخوميوس : لا تحتقر أحداً من الناس ولا تدنه ولو رأيته ساقطاً فى الخطيئة لأن الدينونة تأتى من تعاظم القلب أما المتضع فإنه يعتبر كل الناس أفضل منه فبأى حق تدين عبداً ليس لك فان سقط لربه فربه قادر أن يقيمه .

Saint Bakhomius said: Do not degrade or condemn anyone even if you see him falling into sin, because condemnation comes from a haughty heart, whereas, a modest person considers everyone better than himself. What right do you have in condemning the servant of another for repented before his God, his God is capable of forgiving him.

إن أردت أن تكون معروفاً عند الله فإحرص ألا تكون معروفاً عند الناس. (القديس باسيليوس)

قال أحد الأباء : لا تسكن فى موضع له إسم ولا تجالس إنساناً عظيم الإسم .

If you want to be known to God, make sure not to be known to people. (Anba Basilius)

One of the forefathers said: “ Do not live in a famous place and do not sit with someone with a great name" 

قال أنبا بيمن : كما أن الأرض لا تسقط لأنها أسفل هكذا من يضع نفسه لا يسقط .

Anba Bimen said: "As the ground does not fall because it is already below, so is someone who humbles himself for he will not fall."

قال شيخ : باب الرحمة هو الإتضاع ومنه دخل أباؤنا إلى الملكوت بغنيمة عظيمة .

A pious elder said: The door to mercy is modesty and through it our fathers entered heaven with great precious treasures.

سئل شيخ : " ما هو الإتضاع ؟ " فقال أن تحسن إلى من أساء إليك وتسكت فى جميع الامور .

A pious elder was asked: “ What is humbleness?.” He said: “to be kind to whoever wronged/hurt you and to be silent in all matters. ”

قال أنبا باخوميوس : إسلك طريق الاتضاع لأن الله لا يرد المتواضع خائباً لكنه يسقط المتكبر وتكون سقطته شنيعة فإغلب أعداءك بترك الكبرياء وإحذر طلبها لئلا تفرح أعداءك.

Anba Bakhomius said: “ Walk in the path of modesty because God does not turn down a modest person but He leaves a proud man fall and his fall is a terrible one. So, defeat your enemies by abandoning pride and beware of seeking it so as not to please them.

قال القديس باخوميوس : " سألنى أحد الاخوة مرة قائلاً : قل لى منظرا من المناظر التى تراها لنستفيد منه . فأجبته قائلاً : " إن من كان مثلى خاطئاً لا يعطى مناظر ولكن إن شئت أن تنظر منظرا بهيا يفيدك بالحق فأنى أدلك عليه وهو: إذا رأيت إنساناً متواضع القلب طاهراً فهذا أعظم من سائر المناظر لأنك بواسطته تشاهد الله الذى لايرى فعن أفضل من هذا المنظر لا تسأل .

Saint Bakhomius said :One of the brothers asked me once: tell me one of the visions that you see so that we can benefit from it. I replied: Whoever was a sinner like me does not see any visions, but if you want to see a glorious vision that would truly benefits you, I will guide you to it; that is: If you see someone pure and with a modest heart, this is the greatest of all visions, because through him, you see God who is not seen. So do not ask for a better vision.

أخبروا عن راهبين قديسين. كان أخوين وسكنا البرية، فحرص الشيطان على أن يفرق بينهما، ففى بعض الأيام أوقد الصغير منهما سراجاً ووضعه على منارة، وبحيلة من الشيطان وقع السراج وإنطفأ ، فحينئذ حرض الكبير وضربه، فصنع الصغير له مطانية وقال له : " لا تضجر يا أخى أطل روحك على وأنا أوقدها مرة أخرى “ ،

There were two saintly monks who were brothers and lived in the desert. The devil was keen on separating them so, one day, the younger one lit a lamp and placed it on a lamp stand, but the devil plotted against him and dropped the lamp and put it off. Then, the devil motivated the elder brother to beat the younger one. The younger brother fell down on his knees before his elder brother (made a metanya) and told him: “ Do not be angry my brother; be patient with me and i will re-light the lamp."

فلما أبصر الرب صبر الأخ ، عذب ذلك الشيطان إلى الصباح. ثم ذهب ذلك الشيطان فأخبر رئيس الجن بما كان ، وكان كاهن الأوثان ، الذى يخدمهم موجوداً، فلما سمع ذلك الكلام ، ترك كل شئ وآمن وترهب ، ومن بدء رهبانيته ، كان يستعمل الإتضاع الكامل. وكان يقول : ”إن الإتضاع يقدر أن يقهر ويحل ويبطل كل قوة العدو وقد سمعتهم يقولون بعضهم لبعض : إنه كلما ألقينا السجس بين الرهبان نجدهم يتلقونه بالإتضاع ويعمل بعضهم لبعض مطانيات ، فكانوا بذلك يبطلون قوتنا.

When God saw the patience of the younger brother, He tortured this devil till the morning. Accordingly, this devil went to Satan and told him about what had happened and the pagans’ priest who was serving them was there. When he heard what was said, he left everything, believed, and became a monk. He acquired full modesty ever since the beginning of his monastic life, and he used to say: "Modesty is capable of conquering and dissolving all of the enemy's strength and stopping his power, and I have heard them (the devils) saying to one another: “Whenever we throw a trouble between the monks, we find them receiving it with modesty and each of them does the metanya to one another and thus they disable our power".

إحتمل الخزى والحزن من أجل اسم المسيح بإتضاع وقلب شغال وإطرح أمامه ضعفك، فسيكون لك الرب قوة .

For the sake of Lord Jesus Christ’s name, bear the shamefulness and sadness with modesty and a loving heart and cast your weakness before Him, for God will be your strength. (Anba Mousa El Aswad) 

قال شيخ : إن خاتم المسيحى الظاهر هو الصليب وخاتمة الباطن هو الإتضاع فهذا مثل صليب الرب وذلك مثل خالقه .

A pious elder said: The apparent stamp of a Christian is the cross, and his hidden one is modesty. The former is like the Lord's cross, while the latter is like His creator.

سئل شيخ : ما هى أعظم الفضائل ؟ " فقال : إذا كان الكبرياء أشر الخطايا حتى إنه أهبط طائفة من السماء إلى الأرض ، فمن البديهى أن يكون الإتضاع الحقيقى المقابل لها أعظم الفضائل إذ هو يرفع الإنسان من الأعماق إلى السماء .

A pious elder was once asked: What is the greatest of all virtues? He said: if pride is the worst of all sins that it caused the falling of an entire group of angels from heaven to earth, then obviously, modesty is the greatest virtue as it lifts man from down to heaven.

إذا مضيت إلى ضيعة مع أخوة لا تعرفهم فإعطهم التقدم فى كل شئ ولو كانوا أصغر منك . (أنبا أشعياء)

If you went somewhere with some brothers you do not know, give them the priority in everything, even if they were younger than you. (Anba Isaiah)

عود لسانك دائماً أن يقول " إغفر لى " فيأتيك الإتضاع . (أنبا أشعياء)

Always get your tongue used to saying : "forgive me", for it will get you humbleness. (Anba Isaiah)

طوبى للذين يحفظون ويعملون .

لا تفتخر بالإسم بل إجتهد فى العمل لأن العمل هو الذى يبرر ولو كان بلا شكل ولا إسم . (مار إسحق)

Blessed are those who learn and do what they have learned.

Do not be proud of your name but work hard for work will make a righteous out of you even if it was formless or nameless. ( Saint Isaak )
