Class routines:

PE: Physical education lessons will be held on a Monday afternoon, if this changes I’ll let you know. We will revisit and build upon the learning from this lesson in shorter, active intervals across the week.

Snacks: All children will be provided with a snack, however if you would rather provide one for your child that’s absolutely fine. The expectation is that the snack is healthy and does not contain nuts.

Assemblies: Your child will attend assemblies on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday we will have book club where we will share our favourite books.

Reading at Home

.

Your child will bring home a bookmark for you to fill in at home and receive rewards accordingly.

The book mark will be in their reading diary for you to use to record any reading and where we will also record reading done in school. Please make sure these are kept in your child’s bag.

Your child may also bring home worksheets to practice any sounds they are unsure of.

Children can read books from home as well as borrow books from school.

Books will need to be returned every Wednesday so we can change them.

Phonics screening check

  • Children in year 1 will complete the phonics screening check in June 2026.
  • This is a short assessment to gain an understanding of whether each child is making sufficient progress with their year 1 phonic knowledge, or whether they may benefit from some additional support in year 2.
  • Children will be asked to decode (read) 40 words which are a mixture of real and alien words.

Communication

Please do not hesitate to communicate with me if you have any concerns or information you wish us to be aware of. Once I am aware, I will work with you to address any concerns.

I am available to talk to you in the morning when greeting your child. However, as this is a busy time of the day, this is really for essential/urgent information only. I am free to speak after school. Please just contact the school office to arrange a meeting.

Often the best communication is via email. My email address is year1teachers@parksideprimary.org and I will attempt to get back to you as soon as possible.

Trips

In the past we have done many trips like visiting Drusilla’s and the aquarium. We have many opportunities to explore the local area and admire its characteristics.

There are also lots of learning opportunities to enrich their learning with different visitors.
