Introduction & Background

  • AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are now deeply integrated into campus life.
  • Students use AI for writing, brainstorming, studying, editing, or even research.

This Raises a Key Question:

  • If students today rely heavily on AI, does their degree represent the same level of ability as previous graduates?

Why Should AI be Deployed?

  • AI dramatically improves efficiency in output. (Chen, 2025)
  • Provides equal access to high quality support for students at any time.
  • It prepares students for a workforce where AI is already being implemented.
  • Students will use AI regardless.

However: AI Will Devalue Recent Degrees

  • Job Market is competitive.
  • AI provides shortcuts in writing, analysis, reading, and outlining.
  • Degrees indicate “this student mastered XYZ”.
  • AI signals “this student mastered XYZ with the help of AI”
  • Is the institution creating the success or are the students good with AI.

The Gap Between Pre-AI and Post-AI Degrees

Pre-AI

  • Developed study habits through trial and error.
  • Similar quantity of work as Post-AI.
  • Expectations for quality of work were the same as now.

Post-AI

  • AI for studying, homework, and assignments at high levels.
  • AI for brainstorming, lifestyle, and job search.

In Common

  • Degree from the same institution.

Solution

  1. Redesign Assessments to Mimic Post-College Work
    • More oral-exams, presentations, in class writing, and activities.
  2. Teach AI literacy as Core Requirement
    • Courses on prompt-engineering, AI ethics, and AI assistance.
  3. Increased Transparency
    • Require process logs, drafts, and prompts as part of assignment deliverables.
    • Punish for “unethical use” not “use”.
