Advent is a time in which we change our attitudes and actions. Jesus’ presence in liturgies helps strengthen people to turn away from sin like cheating, lying and meanness so they can grow more like him.

Advent is the time set aside in the Church’s year for people to reflect on how they are living and put things right in their lives so they will be ready for Christ’s Second Coming and the enjoyment of being in God’s kingdom forever.

The Old Testament prophets preached to the people that Christ would come again to bring God’s kingdom that he started to completion, but as it was not known when this would happen, the people needed to stay alert, turn away from sin and be ready for Christ to come.

The messages of advent

The message and meaning of Advent is to reflect on our lives and open our hearts so Jesus may become present to us in a more meaningful way.

Advent is a time of karakia and a time to prepare our hearts by reaching out in love to those in need.

This means that as followers of Jesus we will feel his presence in our lives, especially when life is hard.

Advent is a time of new hope (tūmanako) as we rely on God’s goodness and power to bring peace to a troubled world.

Jesse Tree

The Jesse tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: “A shoot shall come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” Jesse was the father of King David. We adorn a Jesse tree with illustrated ornaments that represent the people, prophesies, and events leading up to the birth of Jesus. The ornaments of the Jesse tree tell the story of God in the Old Testament, connecting the Advent season with the faithfulness of God across four thousand years of history.
