ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

After having students do a

questions and issues sheet on

what turned out to be a failed

research proposal for a Center for Testing Materials

Under Extreme Conditions,

students must

  1. List all causes of failure;
  2. Associate those causes with failure mechanisms; &
  3. List a set of preventive actions to make sure those failures don’t happen

Photos are of Mike Gordon (M.S. MAE, 2001) and his former advisor, Dave Fleming

(former AE program chair)

Mike Gordon was in charge of Boeing’s contract for the silica

space shuttle tiles prior to impact by an ice-filled porous polymer foam and later worked for Piper Aircraft.

Both space shuttle disasters were preventable.

Celebration of the 3C’s: A Showcase for Makers

https://engineeringunleashed.com/card/821

A) Spending at least two hours per week in a supervised making environment OUTSIDE of class time

B) Exhibit curiosity according to the number and complexity of sensors, controls, CAD drawings, objects made, materials and tools used, and computer programming done in the end-of-semester project (degree of difficulty factor).C) Exhibit curiosity as measured by the thoroughness of a Web of Science search, a patent search, web site searches of articles, specification sheets, and price quotes from vendors and/or competitors as part of the end-of- semester project.      D) Integrating information (Students will compile a Web of Science search, a patent search, and web site searches of articles, specification sheets, and price quotes from vendors and/or competitors as part of the end-of-semester project.  Triple value is awarded to each item that is associated with an e-mail or phone call and the name of the person contacted.  Then student groups will prepare a table summarizing a preliminary score and justification for this section.

E) Assign value to others’ products at the showcase as follows: (Each student/faculty/staff evaluator will be granted $2000 in Monopoly money that they can spend on others’ products (proceeds going to a container with a yellow Post-It note) to simulate customer interest, invest in others’ products (proceeds going to a container with a pink Post-It notes) to simulate crowdsourcing, or not spend the money at all on the night of the showcase.  After the showcase, students’ Monopoly dollars will be divided by 100 and be redeemable for Arduino-based sensors, controls, and other items from excess inventory.)

22

Intellectual Merit

A) Most R&D projects now require significant multidisciplinary teamwork and equipment development companies are often small enough that a jack-of-all-trades and master of several

is required, but university experiences largely don't reflect that.

B) Students now treat analytical equipment as a "black box" without knowing how to build/repair

it. This lack of detailed knowledge limited employers' willingness to hire my nanotech minor

students before the maker course.

C) Open source vs. proprietary hardware: Is the rate of technology changing so fast now that the

business model must change with it?

Broader Impact

By dramatically lowering the cost of lab equipment (typically 10x):

A) More students will get the opportunity to learn more pieces of equipment.

B) More Ph.D. students will be able to build/fix their equipment, improving graduating rates.

C) The number of people capable of invention will be quite a bit higher.

D) The rate of technology development will accelerate.

E) The burden of R&D to the taxpayers will be reduced.

F) The combo of the outreach program and book tour can serve to push a lot of maker

content to MUCH earlier in a student's education!

Transforming Mindset from "I Can't Because ..."

For many years, I was frustrated when research students would come to me asking

for help on tasks that most engineers would consider prerequisite topics. I would teach

them that missing skill only to have them return in a couple of weeks saying, "But I don't know how to do ..."

Many people self-impose limits on what they can

accomplish because they lack one or more skills. We

don't just have to inspire students to understand the

3C's, but we need to come up with a condensation of

all the prerequisite skills for engineering & research.

Students benefit from increased skills

Professors benefit from having more productive students

Administrators benefit because overall research productivity increases

Break through your self-imposed limits!

For students at other universities or in

By the time that students complete the Basics of Making course, they should have all of the maker skills, much of the graduate research background, and some of the business background necessary to pursue research.

An entrepreneurial minded learning (EML) focused course should replace UG First Year Experience.

Along with the bottom two green process & product design courses (instead of the one Intro to Engg. course) to get students familiarized with all making skills, the four upperclass purple courses can be offered on a two-year elective rotation. The purple technical elective column is where a EM- and research-focused discipline-specific minor should fit, with the courses changing to reflect the research emphasis of a such a minor. The research experiences should be geared toward junior and senior summer, with the opportunity for students at all KEEN university partners to take a common discipline-specific course with other common research skills similar to how NSF REUs do. This curriculum was written for ChE's and BME's but is easily adapted, BUT
