Standard 8

Research consistently confirms that family engagement is one of the most powerful predictors of children’s development, educational attainment, and success in school and life.

Yet… it has not been central to conversations about educational improvement, equity, and reinvention efforts.

Family Involvement v. Family Engagement

The latin root of the word "involvement" is “involvere” which means to envelop, surround, overwhelm, literally “roll into.”

The latin root of the word "engagement" is “engare” which means to make a formal agreement (to enter into a relationship), to contract with; to pledge; an obligation to do something.

Think about which enables co-creation.

The Learning Gap

(The Why)

Students are awake for about 6,000 hours a year; only 1,000 of those hours are spent in school.

How can schools influence the remaining 5,000 hours? How do we work with families and communities to cocreate family and community engagement that will enable success for each and every student.
