-Thanksgiving is a big holiday in the United States and Canada

-It is celebrated on the last Thursday of November in the US

-Families come together to celebrate and eat LOTS of food!

History of Thanksgiving

-In 1620, Pilgrims from Europe sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to America

-They wanted to leave England and find a new and better life in America

-The voyage was long and dangerous

-They came to America, but life was very difficult

-In the winter, they didn’t build enough homes or have enough food

-Many pilgrims died on their way to the NEW WORLD

The Native Americans

-Before the Pilgrims came, there were Native Americans who lived there

-The pilgrims THOUGHT it was a NEW WORLD, but the “Indians” had been living there for a long time

-They were called the Wampanoag Indians

They knew how to build houses, hunt, plant, find food like berries

Squanto and the Pilgrims

-Squanto was a Native American who helped the Pilgrims

-He showed them how to survive: how to hunt for deer, find berries and nuts

-He taught them how to plant corn and other vegetables

-Thanks to Squanto and the other Indians’ help, there was food to eat in the Summertime!

The First Thanksgiving

-The First Thanksgiving was celebrated in the fall (autumn) of 1621

-The Pilgrims were so happy with all of the food that had grown!

-They had corn, pumpkin, peas, beans

-They wanted to have a celebration!

-They went out hunting for food for the celebration

-The Natives heard them hunting and joined them for a 3 day celebration of food and games!

The Truth about Natives and Pilgrims

-After Squanto and the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims, things became complicated

-More and more Europeans came to America and the Pilgrims didn’t need the help from the Natives to survive anymore

-They were not friendly anymore

-The Pilgrims took their land and their supplies and even their lives!

-Eventually, many Native Americans died because of diseases from the Pilgrims

How do we celebrate?

-a VERY popular weekend in the United States

-The airports are very crowded because everyone is trying to go home to their families

-We “give thanks” for all that we have

-We prepare a big meal and eat very early in the afternoon (at 4pm or 16:00)

-We eat so much until we are STUFFED

-We have special recipes that have been passed down from our ancestors

Thanksgiving Dinner

-The BEST part of Thanksgiving

-The main dish is Turkey (pavo) with gravy

-Traditionally, Americans eat mashed potatoes (pure), cranberry sauce (salsa de arandanos) green beans (ejotes), bread (pan), stuffing, sweet potatoes/yams, pumpkin pie and apple pie (pastel de calabaza y pastel de manzana)

-My family eats croissants with an orange sauce

-My brother makes a pumpkin dessert and I make pumpkin chocolate chip cookies
