You are combining the work of Viktor & Rolf alongside Rei Kawakubo, under the label name VR&Rei.

You are to design and develop one finished garment after developing a brief and using design processes to find the most appropriate solution.

Outcome 1Design and plan a product with component parts in response to a design brief based on a common theme, both individually and within a team. Outcome 2 will require you to produce the garment.

VR&Rei

Taking the brief developed in response to work by Viktor & Rolf and Rei Kawakubo students have made initial design sketches for a collaborative collection.

These sketches will be sampled and explored with pattern making and production methods.

After a tutorial on the ethos of the Draping Method and discussions on Form, students will be asked to refine, enhance and finalise their designs, using garment specification sheets.

Draping Techniques - Key Points

What is Draping?

Fashion design technique where you drape fabric around a dress form (stand) and pin it into the desired shape.

Things to consider:

  • Fabric Grain Vertical Line of the body - Find the Fall
  • Freestyle Draping / Traditional Draping
  • Warp / Weft

17 of 17

GrainThe three named grains are straight grain, cross grain, and the bias grain. In sewing, a pattern piece can be cut from fabric in any orientation, and the chosen grain or orientation will affect the way the fabric hangs and stretches and thus the fit of a garment.

Warp / Weft

In weaving, the weft is the term for the thread or yarn which is drawn through the warp yarns to create cloth. Remember! Weft - Left and right, Warp up and down

SelvedgeIs the term for the self-finished edges of fabric. In woven fabric, selvages are the edges that run parallel to the warp, and are created by the weft thread looping back at the end of each row.

Wrong side

The "back" of a piece of fabric having a distinct front and back.
