Monthly Lunches with the Principal

Celebrating students of high character at MMS!

TEXT or PHOTO

3 of 15

Celebrating students is part of who we are at MMS!

Each month our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teachers are asked to nominate students within their teams who personify the H.E.A.R.T. of a Red Imp.

(link here)

One student per trait is celebrated from the team, and reasons are provided for WHY that student has shown exceptional character in their classrooms recently!

Two questions are asked:

  1. What’s going well at Mooresville Middle School that shouldn’t change?

  1. What’s something that MMS can change to make us a better school?

Here are some of the responses from our students:

What’s going well at Mooresville Middle School that shouldn’t change?

6th grade:

  • Electives: Like the teachers and class choices. Wheel is good! We like switching electives and trying out different elective classes. Favorite is PE, Spanish, CTE careers and Art.
  • Teachers can handle disruptive kids well. Can help get class back on track.
  • Teachers are helping kids learn every day.
  • Flamingos’ teachers hand out tickets when kids do well. Can buy prizes with tickets.
  • Mr. Thornhill knows math and science really well.
  • Amazing lunches! Chicken wings, cheese dippers, walking tacos.
  • Computer Science projects are fun.
  • Careers with Ms. Kepley - She’s very nice and does fun activities!
  • Continue with cosmetology club.
  • Club time is good!

Here are some of the responses from our students:

What’s going well at Mooresville Middle School that shouldn’t change?

7th grade:

  • Electives: Like the teachers and the class choices.
  • More freedom than 6th grade. More transitions are good and getting to know more teachers.
  • Camp Thunderbird trip was great last year!
  • Ms. Coker does GREAT to help everyone understand before moving on.
  • Mr. Peake is the chillest teacher of the year.
  • 6th grade Wheel was good because we had an option to try all elective classes.
  • Having electives at the end of the day.
  • Foushee is doing a great job of communicating with his students.
  • Celebrating students for doing good in the classroom.
  • Teachers are great! Nice and respectful. Helping us learn. They keep their patience.
  • Cross country is going well.
  • Excited for upcoming sports teams (soccer).

Here are some of the responses from our students:

What’s going well at Mooresville Middle School that shouldn’t change?

8th grade:

  • Teachers act like they want to be here! Teachers promote questions from students - kids feel OK about asking questions. Mostly, rules are enforced fairly.
  • Schedule is good - order of how the classes go. Waterfall class order is good.
  • Activities: Pep rally brings everyone together (do more)
  • Test corrections are helpful to help learning. Teachers take their time to make sure the class understands it. Homework is only assigned if classwork isn’t done. Grades are fair
  • Good teachers: Ms. Woodring is very encouraging to students. Ms. Johnson is good with humor and her jokes help class feel fun. Ms. Hamilton has lots of information and knows her stuff.
  • Gateway was great - Paced right & good layout. Enjoyed it!
  • When teachers hold for 2 minutes, that helps with hallway traffic.
  • Clubs: We have more diversity and options this year. Life Skills were better this year compared to last year.
  • Ms. Zocchi and Ms. Hughes: Speed of teaching is very good and supportive.

It’s always a great day to spend time with our Red Imps!

Here are some of the responses from our students:

What’s something that MMS can change to make us a better school?

  • More time outside (SHAC time) *
  • Fix AC units (so cold in Ms. Hamilton’s classroom) *
  • Consistency with E-Hall pass. *
  • More options for after school clubs. Change Friday clubs more often. Add jump rope and baking clubs.
  • More chances to show learning (not just one quiz/test).
  • Longer lunch. Maybe sit where you want? Idea - Breakfast for lunch?* Open campus for lunch (McDonalds/Publix).
  • Make the hallways bigger so everyone can fit through. Traffic in hallways is bad during core transitions and Imp Time. Maybe a staggered transition might help.
  • MHS has girls flag football team… Could we start that at MMS? Start a Wiffle Ball league.
  • Not all teachers show the ImpTV news show. *
  • More spirit days (every Friday?). * More fun spirit days - Anything but a backpack day, favorite hobby, favorite athlete, Twin Day, western days, pajama days.
  • Too many tests. Spread the CFAs out.

Here are some of the responses from our students:

What’s something that MMS can change to make us a better school?

  • Students should use their phones. Maybe bring phones for SHAC? Use phones in classroom BEFORE school starts.
  • Not all kids take advantage of work time. Too many kids play video games when they should be working. Other kids can distract the class from learning. “Good kids” try to tell their peers to make good choices and stay out of trouble but they don’t listen. *
  • Later school start time.
  • See WEB Leaders more often. 1x quarterly is not enough. *
  • SS + ELA classes should do more writing and typing in 6th grade to help students prepare.
  • More activities for people that have already completed the work beyond the 100%. Showing they are doing very well and teachers can see that. More enrichment activities.
  • Tier 1 vocab: The books don’t do much for me. Much different vocabulary in Sadlier books than Check Ins, tests, etc.
  • Prices for concession went up at dances. *
  • Gateway presenters in Imp Space didn’t see many parents.
  • More pep rallies!
