Note Taking Formats
Not all notes are created equal. One skill you can work to hone is choosing the RIGHT FORMAT for your notes, depending on the class, content, and set-up of the information you are learning.
Structured notes where content is organized into columns.
Great for: structured notes where you know ahead of time there will be multiple topics OR you are trying to identify a process
Left hand column to ask questions and use as a study tool.
Great for: anything where you need to learn content, like lecture notes, textbook notes, research
Use of a pre-designated chart to fill in while taking notes
Great for: structured/repetitive content, or as a part of a larger set of notes. Important to pick a format that makes sense for the content.
