Policy 2120- student Activities program

The Board of Education recognizes the importance of student activities, including providing students with meaningful democratic experiences and promoting civic responsibilities. The Board of Education is committed to encouraging students to become involved in these activities and in their own governance. The overall success of the school system relies heavily on the collaboration of the entire school community to include students.

Policy 2120- student Activities program

All schools shall establish a student activities program as an integral part of curriculum, providing personal, social, and democratic governance applications and experiences appropriate to the maturity, needs, and interests of the students. In addition to school-level student activities, the Department of Education shall maintain the student activities program at the district/complex and state levels. The student activities program shall complement, extend, reinforce, and support academic learning experiences.

Our student representative- Emma Jhoanna Tilitile

Hunter Harris- Kapolei High School

The Hawaii State Student Council is comprised of one student from every Hawaii public high school. Every public high school belongs to a district. We are in the Leeward District along with Nanakuli, Kapolei, Campbell, Waipahu & Pearl City. Their purpose is to facilitate communication between the School Student Councils, to hold discussion of student activities & student issues and concerns across the State of Hawai’i. Currently, our representative to the HSSC is senior Emma Jhoanna Tilitile.

There is one non-voting student member to the BOE. He is Hunter Harris from Kapolei High School. He also sits on the HSSC.

When the Board of Education first allowed a student member on the board, the first two BOE student members were from Wai’anae High School (my mistake- not in the 80’s, but in the 90’s- Al Sasa in ‘91 and his brother Sivia Sasa in ‘92). Our most recent BOE student member from WHS was Mark Dannog in 2011. He just became a lawyer.
