What is Short Track Roller Derby?

  • Debuted at Rollercon in 2019.
  • Developed by Rolla Skate Club out of Vancouver to make the game of roller derby more accessible.
  • Full contact roller derby, but smaller.
  • Read the full Rule Set.
  • A fun thing AZRD is trying out this fall!

How is it different from WFTDA roller derby?

  • Smaller, condensed track.
  • 3 on 3 (2 blockers, 1 jammer) per jam, 7 players per team. There is no pivot.
  • Everyone jams at least once per half.
  • 1 minute jams. 10 minute halves.
  • Only need 1 ref, but 2 is cool, skates not required. 1 scorekeeper.
  • No penalty box, just yielding any actual penalties result in a -2pt deduction from the team score.
  • No call offs, jammer starts scoring on first pass. Jammers only score 1 point per pass, not per blocker.
  • We change directions at halftime!
  • Low contact version, no inverted blocks, partner bracing or initial hits as contact.

How will you assess different skill levels?

  • You’re a roller derby player on Day 1! Participants will self assess their level of contact and learn the game by playing right away using a color coded system. (Red/Green/Yellow)
  • RED - I’m new! Use Caution, No Hitting.
  • YELLOW - I’m learning or returning! Light contact, starting to give and receive blocks and hits.
  • GREEN - I’m ready! Full contact okay.

What if I’m not ready yet?

  • The first hour of short track practice allows you to keep working on your skills before you take to the track. We do off skates training, footwork skills and drills.
  • There are lots of ways to participate even if you are not ready to try short track roller derby as a player.
  • Come anyway, and work on your core skate skills while learning the game as an observer and making new friends.

Anything else?

  • Wheels? Come with whatever you have and try it out, this is a matter of preference, some like soft outdoor wheels, some like harder wheels.
  • Do we have to register if we are coming as a fan off skates? Not at this time, but you will have to sign in.
  • Send questions to publicskate@arizonarollerderby.com
