The Informal Decoding Inventory is administered one-on-one to all students. The assessment should be administered in a location where students cannot hear each other’s responses.

  • Assess all sections.
  • Inform students of the focus skill for each section. For example, This section includes real words with short vowels.
  • Real and Nonsense Words for each skill count as individual sections.
  • Discontinue the section if there are no correct responses in the first 3 words and move to the next section.

If a student spells more than 20 words correct on the Primary Spelling Inventory then you have the option to give the Elementary Spelling Inventory to gain more information.

DIBELS ORAL READING FLUENCY

4th Grade Student Passage

4th Grade Scoring Sheet

ORF is administered one-on-one with all students. The passage will be timed for one minute. After one minute, count the total number of words read and the number of words read correctly.

If a student’s words correct per minute is below the 50th percentile on the norming table, IDI Part 2 should be administered and entered into PM. IDI is administered one-on-one.

  • Assess all sections.
  • Inform students of the focus skill for each section. For example, This section includes real words with closed syllables.
  • Real and Nonsense Words for each skill count as individual sections.
  • Discontinue the section if there are no correct responses in the first 3 words and move to the next section.

If students score systematic instruction in the first two sections of Part 2, Part 1 should be administered and entered into PM following the same routines.
