How could we make this summer more ocean-friendly for the Baltic Sea?

Story 1 – Mökki Day

• Last summer, I stayed at a summer cottage near a lake in Finland with my family for a week.�Viime kesänä olin viikon mökillä järven lähellä Suomessa perheeni kanssa.
• The sun was shining every day, so my sister and I spent most afternoons by the water.�Aurinko paistoi joka päivä, joten siskoni ja minä vietimme suurimman osan iltapäivistä veden äärellä.
• Before going swimming, we helped each other put on chemical sunscreen.�Ennen uimista autoimme toisiamme levittämään kemiallista aurinkovoidetta.
• After sunbathing for a while, we jumped straight into the lake to cool off.�Hetken auringonoton jälkeen hyppäsimme suoraan järveen vilvoittelemaan.

Story 1 – Mökki Day

• Because there were many mosquitoes, we lit a mosquito coil near the water and also used mosquito repellent spray.�Koska hyttysiä oli paljon, sytytimme hyttyskierukan veden lähelle ja käytimme myös hyttyskarkotesuihketta.

• Later in the afternoon, we had a small picnic by the lake. After eating, we quickly packed our things and left.�Myöhemmin iltapäivällä pidimme pienen piknikin järven rannalla. Syötyämme pakkasimme nopeasti tavaramme ja lähdimme.

Story 1 – Mökki Day: Hidden Problems

1. Chemical sunscreen before swimming�→ chemicals may enter the water.
2. Jumping into the lake immediately after applying sunscreen�→ increases chemical pollution.
3. Mosquito coil burning near water�→ smoke and chemicals can enter the environment.
4. Mosquito repellent spray near the lake�→ chemicals may drift into water.
5. Possible picnic waste�→ if not managed properly, trash may pollute nature.

Story 2 – Fishing Day

• Last summer, my Finnish friends invited me to go fishing at Lake Inari. We had a fishing license, so we were excited to try fishing there.�Viime kesänä suomalaiset ystäväni kutsuivat minut kalastamaan Lake Inari-järvelle. Meillä oli kalastuslupa, joten olimme innoissamme kalastamisesta siellä.

• We used an old boat. Before using it, we washed the boat with detergent.�Käytimme vanhaa venettä. Ennen kuin käytimme sitä, pesimme veneen pesuaineella.

• After washing it, we immediately pushed the boat into the lake and sailed to the fishing spot.�Pesun jälkeen työnsimme veneen heti järveen ja lähdimme veneellä kalastuspaikalle.

Story 2 – Fishing Day

• On the lake, we used worms as bait to catch fish. We also brought a wireless speaker and played our favorite music playlists loudly.

• We also used a fishing net and threw pieces of bread into the water to attract more fish.�Käytimme myös kalaverkkoa ja heitimme leivänpaloja veteen houkutellaksemme lisää kaloja.

• In about two hours, we caught quite a lot of fish.�Noin kahdessa tunnissa saimme melko paljon kaloja.

Story 2 – Fishing Day: Hidden Problems

1. Washing the boat with detergent near the lake�→ detergent chemicals can pollute the water.

​

• Immediately putting the boat into the lake after washing

→ soap residue goes directly into the lake.

​

3. Play music loudly�→ can cause noise pollution. It may disturb animals, animals rely on sound to communicate and detect danger, so loud human noise can negatively affect their behavior.

​

• Using a fishing net�→ may be restricted in some areas or harm fish populations if not used properly.

​

• Throwing bread into the water�→ can disturb the natural ecosystem and fish diet.

​

Story 3 – Beach Day

• Last summer, my classmates and I went to Nallikari Beach. Some of us used color enhancer because they wanted to get brown skin.�Viime kesänä minä ja luokkatoverini menimme Nallikari Beach-rannalle. Jotkut meistä käyttivät rusketusta korostavaa voidetta, koska he halusivat saada ruskeamman ihon.

• We brought a volleyball and a SUP board because we wanted to do beach activities that day.�Toimme mukanamme lentopallon ja SUP-laudan, koska halusimme harrastaa ranta-aktiviteetteja sinä päivänä. �
• We also brought sausages, disposable cups, plates, and foil because we planned to have a barbecue at the beach in the evening.�Toimme myös makkaraa, kertakäyttömukeja, lautasia ja foliota, koska suunnittelimme grillaavamme rannalla illalla. �

Story 3 – Beach Day

• After swimming, playing volleyball, and doing SUP, we took showers in the shower room. We used our own shampoo and hair conditioner there.�Uimisen, lentopallon pelaamisen ja SUP-lautailun jälkeen kävimme suihkussa suihkutilassa. Käytimme siellä omaa shampoota ja hoitoainetta.
• We used aluminum foil to grill vegetables and mushrooms. We also grilled many sausages on sticks at the barbecue place.�Käytimme foliota vihannesten ja sienien grillaamiseen. Grillasimme myös paljon makkaraa tikkujen avulla grillipaikalla.
• The barbecue lasted about three hours. We were singing, drinking, and having fun together. Story 3 – Beach Day: Hidden Problems

1. Used color enhancer because they wanted to get brown skin�→ It may contain chemicals that could enter the water while swimming and impact the marine ecosystem.

​

• Disposable cups and plates

→ Using disposable tableware, generates a large amount of waste. If blown away by the wind, it may enter the

ocean, causing marine litter.

​

3. Aluminum foil used for barbecue�→ It may be blown away by the wind, remain in the natural environment, or become metal waste if not handled properly.

​

• Showering with shampoo near the beach�→ Using shampoo/conditioner near the beach, these chemicals may enter drainage systems and eventually flow into the ocean.

​

• Long barbecue session�→ Prolonged grilling can lead to smoke pollution, food residue, and incompletely cleaned-up garbage.
