Inspiration

When I visited Los Angeles with my family, I was horrified to see countless homeless tents on the sides of many of the roads.

And during this pandemic, these people have nowhere to go.

They need to be relocated for the safety of themselves and everybody around them.

Our Business Model

Problem

In certain cities such as Los Angeles, the homeless population is significantly high. They face sanitation issues and could be a potential threat during this pandemic.

Solution

They need to be relocated for their own safety and the safety of the local residents. Once areas with high concentrations of homeless tents are identified, the homeless people can be moved to safer camps.

Our Business Model (con.)

Innovation

Using the Picterra platform's machine learning capabilities, our team will train a model that can detect homeless tents given satellite imaging of a portion of a particular city.

Customer

The user of this innovation would be the city of Los Angeles, as it would be responsible for relocating the homeless, improving the overall well-being of the area.

How we plan to automate

For this feat to be achievable on a larger scale. We cannot rely on individually inputting portions of the city to the detector for results. So we have -

  • Written code to divide a larger image into a certain number of smaller images
  • Automatically upload these smaller images into the detector using Picterra API
  • We also hope to generate an automated results pdf that gives coordinates of each tent/streets with the number of tents located on them
