SCRATCH PROGRAMMING

Scratch is a free visual programming language developed by the MIT Media Lab and can be used to create

animations, games, simulations, etc. It provides a stepping stone to the more advanced world of computer

programming. It is easy to view and modify existing projects or to start a project from “scratch”.

In this assignment, you will be following a number of tutorials that will take you through the basic features of scratch. Along the way you will be creating your own scripts and completing a total of five challenges.

  1. To sign in and start the Scratch tutorials, click here. Remember, you are not doing all the challenges in one week (see website)
  2. IF you are struggling with the challenges, view the YouTube lessons on the next slide. Only view these after you have struggled for quite a while (learning won’t happen if you don’t try yourself first).
  3. Check the website for your course to see which challenge you will be handing in.
  4. Hand in the assigned challenge for the week (see the next slide for how to share and hand in your Scratch work)

Steps

Make sure you use an email address you actually use when setting up your Scratch account. This is the only way you will be able to share (hand in) your work.

You will not be completing all of the challenges in the first week (this would be a lot of work!). Make sure you check the website to see which challenges you are actually completing and handing in that week.

CHALLENGE HELP (ONLY IF NECESSARY)

  • When logged in to Scratch, you should see a banner at the top that says “Confirm your email to enable sharing”. Click it. If you don’t see it, you may have to be using Google Chrome as your web browser or go into “My Stuff”. You may also have to resend this confirmation a couple of times before it shows up in your email. It’s a little glitchy… try a few things here...
  • Login to your email account and open the email from Scratch to confirm email.
  • Back in Scratch, click on your username (top right) and select “My Stuff”.
  • Open up the project you would like to share (hand in) and click the “Share” button on the top right.
  • Click on “Copy Link”.
  • To hand in: in Microsoft Teams, go to the appropriate assignment and select add work. Select “link” and paste (ctrl-v) the link you copied in Step 5. Turn in!
